Elks Club Party

"Thanks for arranging the get together at the Elks Club, on Friday May 21st, it was as always a blast to see everyone again. Just like 25 years ago when we all got together just about every weekend we all ended up having fun. Thanks to everyone who showed up and I hope we can do it again real soon. Thanks also to Aileen for creating the Website and giving us out of towners a little slice of Ilion when ever we need some.." - Steve Smith (May 31, 1999)

Congratulations to Gerri on her recent wedding

Gerri Simonette married Scott Hendrix '83, in March 1999. Gerri relayed the news to yours truly, (Aileen) at the recent boozefest [see below]. Thanks Smitty, for getting us all together for old times sake. If it weren't for your email, I wouldn't have made the trip down to the Elks and I would have missed seeing: Tom Bowes, Paul Greenfield, Gerri Simonette Hendrix and Scott, Catherine Canning McCann and Micky McCann, Bob McCann, Joe and Ellen Jones, Sue Bates Mortenson and Neals Mortenson, and Margy Vella. Hope I didn't leave anyone out, but if I did, it's because I left my glasses home. Nancy Morris attended too, via a phone call to the Elks Club! Just to let you know Nancy, we had a swell birthday party for you! (May 24, 1999)

Special Alert - The Boys are back in Town

Steve Smith and Tom Bowes will be back in the Big town, May 21st (we can have a birthday drink for Nancy Morris' too) until May 24th, for the annual May reunion tour with Paul Greenfield. Sounds like the guys will be into some serious carpentry work!

"Especially avoid the Elk's Clubaround 9:30 Friday night, because that's when the boozefest begins. Anyone else is of course welcome to join us, I realy enjoy seeing old friends especially since all I have to hang out with is ... Bowes and Greeny. Hope to see you soon." - Steve Smith (May 16, 1999)

Independent Candidates Wiped Off Village Election Ballot

Republican incumbant Trustee, Mark Cushman, successfully challenged the petitions of Independent candidates Chuck Lester '74 and Tom Bechard '72. The challenge claimed the petitions contained incorrect addresses, duplicated signatures, non-village resident signatures and signatures of non-registered voters. The Herkimer County Board of Elections upheld Mr. Cushman's challenge. The only other candidate up for the Trustee positions is Republican incumbant, Kevin Bluett '74. The Democrats do not have any candidates on the slate, except for current Trustee, Norma Smith, who will be running against incumbant Mayor, Charles Haggerty, the Republican Candidate. Tom and Chuck will run using a write-in campaign. The election is June 1. (modified May 12, 1999)

"This is a Great idea Aileen ! Greeny and Tom Bowes called me last night with buzz on and let me know about this here Ilion chat line. I still enjoy hearing theI lion news especially the sports updates. Here's my story: I'm a purchasing agent for the Univ. Of Pittsburgh Medical Center and I have 3 kids ( 8,6,4 ). I spend my free time working as a board member of the local Citizens Council and the Athletic Association and coaching all the time. The people that still live in the Mohawk Valley have no idea how lucky they are to live in area that doesn't have the crime the big cities now have. I get back to Ilion twice a year and really can't wait to be down at the Elk's club having a beer with Greeny. Take Care." - Steve

"I am still here at the Herkimer PD working as a captain in charge of patrol officers. I have been here for over 20 years and can now retire. I am now planning my second career and wondering where that will take my family and me. I have many times considered moving from the area, but when all is considered, this remains a great place to live and raise a family. I have three children , Andrew 18 yrs, Jared 4 yrs and my little angel, Caitlyn 2 yrs. Reading about all of you guys have brought back so many memories!!!

Reading Elaine's "Red's" personal note reminded me how much Lynn's passing touched me. I was on my way to Cooperstown shortly before she passed away and saw Lynn near her house, I almost stopped, but continued. How I regret not stopping now. Lynn and Randy both kept us laughing.

We should all use this website as a vehicle to keep in touch. Staysafe." - Bob

My orginal thought was to take a quick look before starting work, an hour later and I'm still here. I have sent 2 e-mails and there is still more info. I would like to look at. It seems hard to believe that we have been out of high school 23 plus years now and that I have been in St. Louis 19 years. I would love to hear from old class mates and anyone who lives in the St.Louis area." - Okie (March 19, 1998)

Ken Lynch - Annunciation Alumnus, email , Scottsdale, Arizona, sent news for the Class of 1974.

"I hope you remember me. We were in class together for many years at Annunciation....from Sister Kathleen all the way to Sister Zoe....before weLynch's packed up for Arizona in the summer of 1970. I never got the chance to attend IHS, but Ilion will always be my hometown, and I have very fond memories of the town and the people I grew up with."

I was tickled to find the IHS home page and enjoyed looking for familiar names from Annunciation in the class of '74. I found so many. Some people, like you and Bobby McCann and Tom Bowes and Monica Block and Sue Bates and Bill Entwhistle and Chris McGrath and Nancy Morris, I remember as sharply as I remember yesterday. Other names startled me into recognition....people I had almost forgotten about over the decades (Sheesh! It's been 28 years!)"

"I graduated high school here in Scottsdale AZ, and graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Ill with a degree in Radio/TV. I worked as a reporter/producer in Phoenix television for many years before taking a TV/radio reporter job with NHK broadcasting in Osaka, Japan. I was there for three years, and met my wife there. We've been married five years now and have a little girl, Kaitlyn. I am now Executive Producer for the City of Phoenix Video and Multimedia Productions Division. Most of my work is community relations, issues management and LOTS of local politics. We live in Scottsdale."

Rich is an attorney in Phoenix and has three children. Brian works as an inspector with the City of Scottsdale. Take care! Please remember me to any old classmates. "Danny is currently out here and trying to decide if he wants to move out here with MY WONDERFUL NEPHEW Brandon. He is the greatest. He is 13 yrs and nothing like my brothers were at that age. Thank God."

"I was shocked to read about Lynnie and Randy. I don't know why? It is to be expected that there will be death with life ... So I am freshly sad for this world and their families' loss. I know we all remember Ilion and our life experinces there differently and I would like people to know I found both of those souls to be warm and inviting. They were never closed or shallow or discriminating. Lynnie was always a reflection of laughter to me. Every memory I have of her is laughing and befriending to me. If it were not for her uplifting spirit at our 10 year reunion, I don't think I would have felt as if I belonged. I know this may sound corny, but hell I have thought 1001 times of looking her up and telling her, and now it is not possible and so I'll tell you and any one else who cares to know."

"It is hard to type through my tears so I'll close now. Oh yea Peggy Nile,MD lives North of me. Cranney and I took a road trip and went to Janie's wedding a few years ago. The whole clan lives out here even Jane aka Mrs. Nile. Peg has two boys Benjamine and Jacob. To me one looks like their dad, John, while the yougest looks like Sam."

"Well I'll sign off for now. I'd sure like to hear from the spirits of 74' it is a wounderful time to reflect on."

News from Bob Vayo email ...

"I envy you being back in that piece of heaven and working on the Ilion Days. I have high hopes of one day making it back there to take part in the celebration. About the wife Tracy is the Director of Clinical Education at the large children's hospital here in Salt Lake City. Tracy grew up back east and the rest of her family now lives in Charleston, SC. We have two great kids....We were fortunate to have found a nice home on the foothills overlooking the city before housing prices went through the roof. We have nothing but mountains up behind our house (with plenty of deer, elk, and your occasional tarantula and rattlesnake). We're 10 minutes from the heart of the city, and 30 minutes from the best skiing in the world. I think the Alumni Website is a great idea, and would be glad to contribute info regarding life in SLC [Salt Lake City] and perhaps the Olympic Games in 2002. It's quite a big deal around here, and I think it will be interesting to see all the goings on up close. Please keep me posted on Ilion goings-on. We have tentative plans to be back for Christmas this year, and if so I'd like to buy a drink for any members of the Class of '74 we can assemble. Thanks for being my link to our piece of heaven. Bob"

As I said, I haven't been home to Ilion for a while ( a fact my Mom & Dad) remind me of! Glad to see info about the old class....I have talked to a few classmates via the net in the past several months. Well, hope to see more in the future! Good to hear from you!"
