Commemorative plaques, some of which were stored in the basement of the Ilion High School, are now on display at the cafeteria entrance to the Central Valley Academy High School building. Mr. Ken Long, School Business Manager, and Brady Boyd, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds and member of the Class of 1975, facilitated the display of these plaques. Ilion School District plaques are on display at Central Valley Academy. Mohawk School District plaques are on display at the former Jarvis School building.

"World War I"

During World War I, the Herkimer County Home Defense Committee created a compilation of county residents who served. The original book, "Herkimer County in The World War 1916 - 1918", was published in 1927. As soldiers were drafted and offered their services as volunteers, the Herkimer County Home Defense Committee undertook the task of collecting information. The book was not a complete record. The entire book is available as pdf files thanks to the efforts of Ilion Alumnus Paul McLaughlin '41, his wife, Ilion alumnus Carol Baxter McLaughlin '41 and Lisa Slaski, of the Herkimer County GenWeb site. The pdf files contain the birth dates, those killed in action and the discharge dates of the soldiers.

Other names, not listed in the book, can be found in The Ilion Citizen newspaper cited further down in this article.

Herkimer County in World War

The Herkimer County Home Defense Committee was organized to take a military census and inventory of the resources of the State of New York to be used in the event of war. The committee was appointed upon the request of the Governor of NY. Several members of the committee and sub-committees were Ilionites. Frank A. Schmidt was Vice-Chairman of the Home Defense Committee and Harlan P. Hamlin was Chairman of Defense and Security Committee. The committee was created to defend homeland assets, such as, the railroad property, the State dams at Hinckley and Delta, the electric light plants, and the protection of the Remington Arms. There were about five hundred men enlisted for that service. Albert B. Russell was chairman of Military Intelligence. That committee surveyed all the industrial plants relative to labor supply in meeting government contracts. It also dealt with the loss from the industrial plants of men going into military service and supplementing the service by supplying women workers wherever possible. Dr. Jennie M. Richardson served on the Medical and Hospitals Committee.

The Remington Arms hired more than 13,000 new employees, for its Ilion plants, between 1914 and 1917. Woodrow Wilson conferred with Marcellus Hartley Dodge just three days before the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Remington Arms supplied thousands of rifles to Czar Nicholas, in the days preceding the Russian Revolution. Czar Nicholas placed orders for a million rifles with Remington Arms. The Russians defaulted on their payment, after the death of the Czar. These same Russian rifles were later sold to the U.S. Army for use in World War. These arms helped the U.S. enter the war quickly. Remington Arms supplied American, British and French forces with arms. The company provided Belgium with all of its ammunition. Remington Arms produced 69% of all rifles used by American troops, and more than 50% of small-arms ammunition required by the U.S. and the Allies.

"Dennis J. McLaughlin"

Paul McLaughlin's father,Dennis J. McLaughlin, was the first Commander of American Legion Post 920. During World War I, Dennis J. McLaughlin served in the Army Air Corps. There was no separate Air Force branch during World War I. He was an instructor of pilots in aerial gunnery in the States, and flew Curtis Jenny aircraft. His appointment as Second Lieutenant was effective August 17, 1918.

The Lever Cup and William Hempstead - Class of 1916

Harold 'Boots' Lever, a former student of the Ilion High School, presented a very beautiful cup, The Lever Cup, to the school in 1924, as a tribute to William Hempstead - Class of 1916, and William Schletterer, former students in the High School, who lost their lives in World War I. This cup is given to the boy who has earned the greatest number of points based on scholastic and athletic work. For a list of honorees, visit The Lever Cup.

"Ilion World War I Names"

The names of Ilionites who served during World War I, as noted in the original book, "Herkimer County in The World War 1916 - 1918" and transcribed by the McLaughlins are listed below.
