Remington and the Ilion School District

On November 30, 2023, the Remington company announced that it is closing its Ilion's facility in March 2024. See this video of the announcement - Remington Firearms consolidates manufacturing. This ends an era for all of us.

The last elementary school built for the district, in 1977, was named The Remington Elementary School.

The image of Eliphalet Remington became our district's official seal and appeared on yearbooks and district documents.

The noon whistle is steeped deep in our memories and that includes the fire alarm codes blown through the whistle at the factory.

The Remington Arms could be counted on to advertise in every school yearbook - The 2013 Mirror Yearbook was the last Mirror for the Ilion School District and this shows the last Remington Ad in a Mirror.

School Seal and Coat of Arms

Ilion High School Coat of Arms

The Ilion Central School Coat of Arms was created by Gary Conover and Dan McGrath, members of the Class of 1964. For the past three decades, this unique and impressive looking seal has adorned the cover of many Ilion Graduation notices, letterheads, Yearbook Covers and other publications.

"Myself and Dan McGrath helped put together the school seal. Now I call it the school seal, because Dave Wells, Wayne Hendrix and others, whom will go unmentioned, had certain girls in the Jr. Class (65) believing the school had a "seal" and Mr. Green was keeping it in the school garage." - Gary Conover

"The drawing, by Dan McGrath, is intended to depict Eliphalet Remington. The laurel is for scholarship, and the winged foot represents athletics. Dan (and Gary) both lettered in track." - Thomas Morris, Class of '64

The first Mirror that featured the image was the 1965 yearbook. This cover was also voted the favorite Mirror cover in a poll conducted on this web site. Other yearbooks with the seal on the cover were: 1967, 1968, 1976, 1979, 1981 and 2012.

In 1975, the company museum loaned the 1916 Eliphalet Remington statue to the Village of Ilion to display in the urban renewal Central Plaza. A newspaper story about this is included on the newspaper links for the Class of 1976.

We sincerely hope that the company will allow the The Remington Centennial Trophy statue, which was featured as a cover story in 2016, to remain in the Village of Ilion.

It seems as if the greedy Mr. Potter, from the movie "It's A Wonderful Life", has swept into Ilion and dashed the dreams of the affected Remington employees. We are very saddened by the loss of this historic business and the country's oldest gun manufacturer from the village of Ilion.

In spite of this sad news, please enjoy yourself and your families this holiday season. Merry Christmas!
