Ilion High Picks Top Students

Students and parents know today that Roger A. Fortuna Jr., will be valedictorian and Harold Shelley salutatorian when Ilion High School's senior class graduates in June.

The announcement was made yesterday at an awards assembly for the top 20 seniors, held in the school auditorium.

Parents, teachers and school boards were honored by various speakers for acting as a "team" to help children through high school courses. Said principal Leo Sammon, "It's not easy to raise children."

Yesterday's assembly honored 10 Regents scholarship winners, six as their alternates, and the top 10 students in grades for the past 3 1/2 years of high school.

Fortuna, son of Ilion Atty., and Mrs. Roger A. Fortuna, 13 Cross St., has averaged 96.558, slightly under last year's 96.7 average of June valedictorian Elizabeth Coons. He recently placed second in the Elks' state youth leadership contest.

Shelley, son of West Hill School principal and Mrs. Barthau B. Shelley, 122 S. Fifth Ave., compiled an average of 94.583. His mother is Franklort-Schuyler Central School nurse.

The others in the top 10, in order, are: Dana Nelson, 93.942 average; Patricia Cowen, 93.363; Sharon Walsh, 91.764; Margaret Keddell, 89.828; Terrance McGrath, 89.457; Linda Vernooy, 88.909; Elaine Volo, 88.828; Patricia Schneck, 88.257.

Fortuna, Shelley, Nelson, McGrath, Miss Keddell and Miss Schneck were announced as Regents scholarship winners, Fortuna ranking filth in Herkimer County.

The other Regents victors named were Lois Burch, Ronald Custer, Patricia Luczynski and Donald Rasmussen.

Scholarship alternates named are Richard Adams, Paul Maxfield, Sandra Montgomery, Michael Mason, Dennis Leek and Bernard Valentine.

The county is awarded 76 Regents scholarships annually, apportioned to the various schools depending on grade scores, it was explained. The scholarships range from $250 to $700 depending on need.

Educators expect this to range in future years from $150 to $1,200. Alternates are selected in case the scholarship nominees decline or attend other than state-supported schools.

Also speaking besides Sammon were School Suptd. George Purple and board president George Friis. Parents were guests at a coffee hour following in the homemaking room.
