Ilion School Head is Cited At Assembly

Ilion - Schools Supt. George II Purple, who is retiring July 31 after more than 33 years in the teaching profession, was honored at the final Ilion High School assembly Wednesday.

Leo J. Sammon, high school principal, commended Purple for his "devotion and service" during the 19 years he has been superintendent in Ilion.

Also honored at the assembly was Miss Jennifer Kitchener, of Aukland, New Zealand, foreign exchange student. A senior, she has been residing with Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hoke, of 101 W. Main St. She plans to return home at the close of school this month.

About 400 pupils attending the assembly were welcomed by Charles Bennett, president, senior class.

Sammon presented the following school awards: leadership, Donald Keddell, Priscilla Burnham, Carol Henry: outstanding senior girl, Carol Adams: senior service, Nancy Frosch and Sandra Shaw: Leo Golicki Memorial, Anthony Maneen: Rocky Cramer Memorial, Douglas Bernard.

Varsity Club, Keddell: Lever Cup, Terrance Sweeney: wrestling trophy, Charles Bennett: basketball trophy, Bernard: track trophy, Thomas Morris: PTA Award, Janet Goldin: friendship award, Bennett.

Miss Leslie DeReus, editor of the 1964 Mirror, senior class yearbook, presented copies of the publication. This year it is dedicated to Miss Barbara Schwarz, who for more than 30 years taught history in the school system.

Also, the publication pays tribute to memory of Leo R. Grygiel, assistant principal, who died this year, and special honor to Mrs. Richard Dimock, who died this year after more than 30 years as village historian.
