Ilion Girls Will Receive Elks Awards

ILION - Kathy Hoffman 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert N. Hoffman, 137 Second St., and Bridget Carney, 18, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Theodore Carney, 12 Crescent St., have qualified for the state Elks' scholarship awards.

T. S. Leahy, Ilion lodge secretary, said the two Ilion High School seniors will be honored at the state Elks' convention on May 22 at Kiamesha Lake. Their cash awards will go directly to the college of their choice.

Miss Carney is considering a career in journalism at Vassar, while Miss Hoffman plans to major in languages at the University of Buffalo. Both won state Regents scholarships and both are members of the National Honor Society, and participated in Colgate - sponsored seminars in their sophomore and senior years.

Miss Carney is co-editor of the school publication "Quill," is member of Student Council and of the Spanish and Latin clubs, and has been active in girls sports.

Also on the staff of "Quill," Miss Hoffman was junior prom committee chairman, committee member of the Junior American Field Service, member of the Modern Music Masters Honor Society, and is active in language clubs.

Atty. John Bergin, Ilion, is chairman of the Elks scholarship committee, which considered applications from students of valley schools.
