Central High School Buzzes With Homecoming Activities

Ilion has spent some of the happiest and most exciting times of the entire school year this past week. The Bombers outstanding victory 27-0 over Mohawk in last week's game won for them the honor of being first in the Iroquois League. It has been ten years since the Ilion football team has had sole ownership of the championship, and all of Ilion is sharing in the joy. The whole student body, especially the team, salutes Coach Warner Kleeman. Mr. Kleeman has devoted all his efforts to make the "Great Big Bombers" the fine team that they are. Last year he promoted the "Comeback Club" and this year he has answered Ilion's "Spirit of 67." Congratulations Coach Kleeman! Ilion High Students are equally as proud of the boys on the football team and congratulate them also.

Today is a big day as the Herkimer "Magicians" in the traditional rivalry. Not only does this game bring to a close a tremendous season for Coach Kleeman and his hall club, preparations for this gala event. Activities finally got under way Thursday when students from Art Club and Council tramped downtown with gallons of paint and dozens of paintbrushes to begin their work --- who will receive first?

Yesterday afternoon classes were shortened to allow time for a Pep Rally. Ilion gladly welcomed two Herkimer representatives and offered them guest seats. A special welcome was also given to the Ilion Alumni who returned for the weekend's festivities. An added attraction to this week's rally was the appearance of the boy cheerleaders. Their deep voices gave the regular cheerleaders welcome support. The grand finale was the crowning of a Homecoming King and Queen by the cheerleaders.

The high spirits carried on as Gary Wood ignited a blazing bonfire in the parking lot in back of school. Following that, at 7:30 there was a snake dance, which led into the school for a sock dance which lasted until 9:30 p.m. The excitement and activity subsided for the night, but was resumed again at 1 p.m. today. At this time, enthusiastic students gathered at the K of C and marched in the Queen's Parade up to the football field. There were ceremonies in honor of the queen. Then she was escorted to her seat to watch the game which was about to start. She was attired in the authentic raccoon coat and carried a dozen long stemmed roses. Parents of senior players and cheerleaders were honored and presented with flowers and seats on the 50-yard line.

Following today's game there will be a "Victory Dance" in the boy's gym from 8 11 sponsored by the Student Council, featuring Bruce Ward and The City Zoo.

Student Council wants to thank Mrs. Lawrence Richards and the Village Officials for helping to make the 1967 "Homecoming" a great success.

With all the celebrations and activities to attend and so many things to do, Ilion students are glad to know that they have this Monday off. We'll need the rest!
