Senior High Student Council

Ilion's Student Council has been an active organization since the school's foundation. In 1929, a Junior High Senate was organized, carrying on the same functions and having the same purpose as the Senior High Organization.

Up until the Fall of 1998, the Student Council was composed of all the presidents of the High School homerooms and the elected officers. In the Spring of 1969, all students in grades 8 - 11 voted for the Student Council officers. This was the first year that the future freshmen were allowed to vote. The office of Corresponding Secretary was created for a member of the Freshman class. Georgia Sternberg, Class of 1973, was the first person to hold this office.

In the Spring of the prior school year, the entire High School elected a president (12th grader), a vice-president (11th grader), a secretary (10th grader), and a treasurer (12th grader). Candidates petitioned to be on the ballot of either the Gold or Brown party.

The primary candiates for each office, who obtained the most petition signatures, ran as the candidate for his/her respective party. An in-school-rally was held where the candidates presented their campaign issues and promises. Campaign managers, from the graduating Senior Class, organized each party's strategy and publicity plan.

Class of 1964 as Freshmen Representatives (1961)

Candidates' posters were plastered all over the schools, presenting not only the party's image, but the artistic talents of future artists. For many of us, our first exposure to democracy in action, parliamentary procedure and Roberts Rules was through the Ilion High School Student Council. We would be reminded of the winner of the office of President, throughout the next school year. Every school morning, the Student Council President began our school day, by reading the morning annoucements over the PA system.

Recently, members of Student Council were selected as representatives from each of the four grade levels. These representatives then selected the officers of the Student Council. Unfortunately, the thrill of the annual Student Council elections is a thing of the past.

The Student Council benefits students because it affords each student a chance to voice his/her opinions on school events. It also gives the elected students a chance to convert their potential leadership qualifications into productive and significant work, which benefits themselves, their school, and their community.

The Student Counci sponsors and coordinates many projects, events, fund raisers, etc.. The members of the Student Council prepare the Homecoming Weekend for the Ilion alumni. Numerous other events are scheduled to benefit the student body and school community.

Class Officers

In the fall of each school year, each class elected a president, a vice-president, a secretary, and a treasurer. From Homecoming Class floats, through the Junior Prom and on to graduation, these were the students who led the class. The Senior Class Presidents also had the privilege of addressing the graduating members of his/her Senior Class during graduation.
