Condolences....

Mary Gilchrist Cooley, IHS 1921, age 99, a lifelong resident of Herkimer County, passed away Oct. 7, 2002. She was born in Ilion May 18, 1903. She was a pioneer for the education of women, earning her bachelor's degree from Cornell University in French Language Arts in the year 1924, and her master's degree in English Language Art. She taught English and French in area schools. Mary G. Cooley shared her life and times with her husband of 55 years, Ernest L. Cooley, a house builder and contractor well known in the area. Ernest died in 1982. Together they raised four sons, Dr. William S. Cooley of Remsen, Dr. James K. Cooley of Delanson, Dr. Daniel J. Cooley of Herkimer and Lake Pleasant and Thomas R. Cooley, pharmacist, of East Herkimer and Morgantown, W.Va. In addition, she has devoted her life to love of her grandchildren and love of her God. Arrangements are being handled by the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. (October 10, 2002)

 

Mrs. Frances C. (Loeffler) Morath IHS 1921, age 96, a resident of Valley Health Services, Herkimer, passed away May 1, 2000. She was born July 26, 1903, in Ilion, the daughter of the late George Loeffler and Elizabeth (Fuller) Loeffler. Frances was educated in Ilion schools and graduated from nursing school as a licensed practical nurse.She was married to James Morath in 1930. Mr. Morath passed away in 1973. For many years, she was a nurse in the maternity department of the former Herkimer Memorial Hospital and the former Mohawk Valley General Hospital. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Camille Morath of Bronx; her grandchild, Elizabeth Bernstein and husband Steven of Amherst; and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Bernstein. She was preceded in death of a son, James Morath in 1953, and granddaughter, Diane Frances Morath in 1971. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, with the Rev. Peter Nabozny, pastor, celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frankfort. Contributions, in memory of Frances, may be made to the Herkimer Area Resource Center, 333 S. Main St., Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at St. Francis de Sales Church prior to the service. Arrangements are by Enea Family Funeral Home. (Main Street between Ilion and Frankfort) (May 2, 2000)
