MOTHER SHOOTS SON, THEN KILLS HERSELF
Mrs. Thaddeus Corbin, 48, Takes Life of Only Child, Ilion, June 12 - Mental illness caused Mrs. Thaddeus B. Corbin, 48, of 373 Otsego Street, to shoot her son, Louis B. Corbin, 23, at her home about 5 o'clock this morning, and then turn the gun on herself, died instantly, and the son passed away about 7 am at the Ilion Hospital. Due to breaking down of health followed by injuries received in an automobile accident near East Winfield in 1926, from which she had never been free from pain, caused her mental trouble. She was confined at the Utica State Hospital for observations for a time, but later returned home. Of late she had shown irrational symptoms, and had been closely watched by members of the family. HIDES WEAPON TAKEN FROM RELATIVE Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Corbin visited the home of the former's brother, Charles Corbin, near West Winfield, and while there Mrs. Corbin found a Colt .38 caliber revolver, Mr. Corbin, missing the weapon, immediately phoned to Ilion and notified her husband. A thorough search was made at the home but the revolver could not be found. As a consequence, Mrs. Corbin, was watched more closely. Mr. Corbin guarded until the return of the son, about midnight, when he went to bed upstairs while the son sat up. Mrs. Corbin slept on a couch in the dining room as had been her custom. It is thought that Mrs. Corbin got up and prevailed upon her son to rest on the couch, where he was discovered shot through the head. The father, hearing the shots, rushed downstairs to find the son as above indicated and the wife shot and lying near the front door breathing her last. He called Dr. F. J. Leonard, also notified the police department and Chief Houck and Officers Dowd and Watson responded with the ambulance, and in this the son was rushed to the hospital. Dr. E. B. Manion, coroner, was also called and took charge of the case. He ordered Mrs. Corbin's body taken to the Applegate Funeral Home. COVERS BLOOD SPATTERS FIRST Blood from the son spattered on the dining room table cloth, and Mrs. Corbin took time to cover it with a postal card and dish before shooting herself. Mrs. Jennie Heiland Corbin was born in this village February 23, 1881, the daughter of Louis G. and the late Mrs. Heiland of 173 West Street. She was a graduate of the Ilion Schools. In 1904 she was married to Mr. Corbin by Rev. S.J. Greenfield. Prior to her illness she was active in church work at the Methodist Church of which she was a member. She was a member of Evening Star.and had filled most of the chairs, and had it not been for her illness and injuries would have been elected worthy matron. She was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Oriental Court, and Order of Amaranth. She was a woman who had the friendship of all, who found in her a good neighbor and one who was always ready to assist others. She is survived by her husband and a brother, Frank Heiland. SON WAS ONLY CHILD The son, Louis, was an only child and was born in Ilion, October 10, 1905 and graduated from the Ilion High School class of 1923. He suffered a nervous breakdown some time ago and it is thought this had some effect on the mother, who feared the future of it. A double funeral service will be conducted by Rev. A. B. Corbin from the home at 373 Otsego Street, Saturday at 2:30 and friends may call to view the bodies Friday night from 7 to 9. Louis B. Corbin - Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion NY - findagrave.com
