Frank Campbell Donates $1 Million to Clarkson University

Class of 1935 Ilion Alumnus, Francis (Frank) B. Campbell, age 88, and his wife Edie (Hayford) Campbell recently donated $1 million gift to Clarkson University in Potsdam.

Mr. and Mrs. Campbell live in Glenville, NY. They met while attending college 65 years ago. She was a student at Potsdam State Teachers College and he attended Clarkson University, on a football scholarship.

He was a football player for Ilion High School in the 1930s and was coached by Joe Bemis.

At Clarkson, he played center on offense and linebacker on defense. While in college, he was also involved with ROTC.

After graduating from Clarkson in 1942, he was assigned to an Army engineering battalion that served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany.

After the war, Mr. Campbell worked for General Electric in Schenectady and at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna. He was assigned to various engineering and management positions at General Electric. He retired in 1982 after 37 years with the company.

He has been president and vice president of the Clarkson Alumni Association. He received the Clarkson University's highest alumni honor, the Golden Knight Award, in 1992.

Mr. Campbell expressed a desire to repay the University that he credited with helping him begin his long and successful career.
