Class of 1941 Obituaries - Prior Condolences

 

Roberta (Bobby) Jarvis Garlock, age 78, of Bradenton Beach, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at home. Born in Ilion, Mrs. Garlock came to Manatee County from there in 1982. She was a homemaker. She attended First Presbyterian Church in Ilion. Survivors include her husband, Donald; two sons, Gregory A. of East Jordan, Mich. and Peter D., of Ashburnham, Mass.; three sisters, Wilma Danforth and Camila Caswell, both of Ilion and Leona Cramer of Big Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. National Cremation Society, Sarasota Chapter, is in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238, or to the American Cancer Society, 600 U.S. 301 Blvd. W., No. 136, Bradenton, Fla. 34207. Harry R. Seymour, a former Ilion resident, died in Northern Virginia Feb. 25, 2001. He was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Ilion, the son of William and Margaret Kenefick Seymour. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1941 before entering the U.S. Navy, where he served our country during World War II. After the war he graduated from Hamilton College and from Syracuse University, where he received his master's and doctoral degrees. Harry and his wife, Betty Bleau Seymour settled in McLean, Va. His professional career then included senior U.S. Government positions in the Navy, the Public Building Service, the Department of Justice and the National Water Commission. He later held senior positions with the Brookings Institution, the Ford Foundation, the National Academy of Public Administration and the American Psychological Association. In 1980, Harry and his wife retired to Spring Valley, Calif., returning to Northern Virginia in November 2000. Survivors include his wife of 57 years; sons, Jon, Donald, James and their wives; daughters, Kathleen, Betsy, Linda, Mary and their husbands; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Rita Korniat of Herkimer; and one brother, Alfred Seymour of Ilion. He was predeceased by one sister, Margaret O'Mara and five brothers, William, Jack, Christopher, Joseph and Burton. Also a cousin, Joseph Kenefick. Cremation will be followed by memorial services March 1 and interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery. (March 1, 2001)

 

Anne Stagg Tiel, 78, Ilion, passed away September 22, 2000, at Valley Health Services. She was born April 17, 1922, in Newark, NJ, the daughter of the late Horace C. and Helen O'Rourke Stagg. She was a 1941 graduate of Ilion High School, and also a graduate of Herkimer County Community College. Mrs. Tiel was employed with the New York Telephone Co. as an operator, retiring several years ago. On May 4, 1979, she married William S. Tiel in Ilion. Mrs. Tiel is survived by her husband William; a daughter, Marianne R. Shepherd of Ilion and her fiancée Francis G. Lee of Utica; a son, J. Michael Purcell of Ilion, a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy J. and Lynne Purcell of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; a stepdaughter, Lynn Cave of Ilion; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Thuma of Cooperstown; a brother, William Stagg of Ilion; two sisters, Rita Morrison of Sun City, FL, and H. Elizabeth Stagg, Syracuse; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Warren and Elizabeth Reardon of Sun City, FL; grandchildren, Sean and April Shepherd of Scottsdale, AZ, Ryan Shepherd of Buffalo, Daniel J. Purcell of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Thomas R. Shepherd III, Sarah Cave, and William Cave, all of Ilion; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially remembering her niece Lindsay Stagg for her loving care and attention. She was predeceased by an infant sister, Mary Rose Stagg; brothers, Clinton and Harry Stagg; a sister-in-law, Margaret Stagg; a brother-in-law, James Morrison; and a son-in-law, Thomas R. Shepherd II. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, with interment in the North Columbia Cemetery. Friends are asked to consider memorials to Herkimer County Hospice or to Make a Wish Foundation in Anne's memory. (October 19, 2000)

 

Burt B. McKeon, 77, of 7408 Song Lake Road, Tully, N.Y., died Aug 22, 2000. He was born in Ilion, and resided in Fabius prior to moving to Tully in 1956. He was a graduate of State University at Potsdam, and was active in music all his life. He taught music at Tully Central Schools retiring in 1977 after teaching music for 32 years. He also taught in Fabius and Bridgewater schools. Mr. McKeon was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Combat Bronze Star. He was a member of NYS Chapter 14th Armored Division and a Communicant of St. Leo's Church.He is survived by a son, Barry J. McKeon of Altoona, Pa.; one sister, Julie Ann Palmer of Ilion; three grandchildren, Jeremy McKeon of Rochester, Scott of State College, Pa., and Carrie of Altoona, Pa. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis in 1987; a son, Burt II in 1977, and grandson, Burt IV in 1988. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, Tully. Interment will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Contributions may be made to any educational fund of your choice. (September 17, 2000)

 

Allen A. Wheelock, 76, a lifelong resident of Wheelock Rd., Town of Litchfield, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. Allen was born May 12, 1923, at the Wheelock homestead on Wheelock Road, son of Danford and Cecil Comes Wheelock. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1941. He attended Morrisville College. He was a lifelong dairy farmer on the Wheelock Farm, town of Litchfield. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Danford and Elizabeth Wheelock, town of Litchfield, and his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ivan Lawrence, of Horseheads. Alos surviving are several nieces and nephews. Allan was predeceased by his parents and his aunt, Mildred Wheelock. Mr. Wheelock's funeral service was held at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home. Interment, in Litchfield Cemetery, will take place later this Spring, at a date and time to be announced. (March 26, 2000)

 

Marion Bradley Doukas, 78, of Beaumont, Texas died January 10, 2000 at her residence. Crematiion will be at Beaumont Haven of Rest Cemetary under the direction of Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home. A native of Ilion, New York, she lived in Beaumont 38 years and was a homemaker. Survivors include daughters, Dimitra Doukas of New York City, Leslie Doukas of Reno, NV and Andrea Doukas of Beaumont: and brother Willard Brown of Lacona, NY. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Three Rivers, No. 51 N. 11th Street, Beaumont, Texas 77702.(January 21, 2000)

 

Lillian Roberts Lankton, 75, of 2 Keasler Road, Asheville, died, Thursday, Sept 16, 1999, at her residence. A native of Ilion, NY, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Lillian Roberts and was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Lankton. She was a retired secretary with the Blue Ridge Parkway and a member of the Blue Ridge Parkway Alumni Association. She is survived by her husband, George A. Lankton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Pam Lankton of Old Fort, Gary and Linda Lankton of Helena, Mont; and three grandchildren, Andrea, Tiffaney and Jason Lankton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Groce United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dr. Al Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetary, Leicester. Her family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the church and at other times, the body will remain at Grice Funeral Home, Patton Avenue. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P. O. Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802 or to Groce United Methodist Church Building Fund, 954 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.

 

Rovilla 'Billie' Adams Hieby - Services for Billie R. Heiby, 68, of St. Helena Street will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, 59 Lake Street. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetaery. Mrs. Heiby died Friday (Jan 17, 1992) in her home. Born in Ilion, N. Y., Mrs. Heiby was a Perry resident for 38 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Her husband, Lowell, died in 1988. Hazel B. (Beach) Seckner, 75, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Seckner was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Mr. Warren J. Seckner and a grandson Trevor Graham. She is survived by her daughters, Lorraine Wolfe, Sandy (Jimmy) Barnes, Terry Addison, a son Courtney (Terri) Seckner, 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many loving friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donation be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory. Cremation arranged by Duval County Cremation Society, Jacksonville. Mr. Bernard 'Bud' Losier, 75, passed away on December 2, 1998, at home. He was born in Ilion, the so of the late Omer and Loretta Morris Losier. He was a graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1941 and served during WWII with the U.S. Army. Bernard married the former Eileen Lynch and they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1997.Mr. Losier was employed as a payroll leader with Remington Arms, Ilion for 39 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion and the Remington Arms 25 year Club. He is survived by his wife Eileen, three daughters and two sons-in-law, two sons and daughters-in-law, 13 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral arrangements were by Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home. Friends are asked to consider memorials to Herkimer County Hospice, Public Health Nursing Service or Sister Mary Jo's Faith Formation.
