Steve Rigo releases new CD, 'Surf and Turf' .....

Mark Sista Utica Observer Dispatch - March 14, 1924
Sometimes a songwriter wants to show off their compositional skills, filling an album with clever, well-crafted and well-performed original tunes that will impress listeners. For Steve Rigo, that would have been his recent blues-rock CD, "Drinkin' with Lincoln." But sometimes, you just want to have fun. For Stevie, that would be his latest, "Surf and Turf," a collection of beach tunes, lesser-known vintage rock songs and miscellaneous musical trinkets. "The theme started out with my love of Surf Music," recalls Rigo. "I was just wanting to record a couple of songs for myself, never dreaming it would turn into an entire album. One thing led to another, and it just kept rolling." - See Music column: Steve Rigo releases new CD, 'Surf and Turf'(October 9, 2024)

Class of 1970 50th reunion Celebrated in 2021 .....

The IHS class of 1970 celebrated their 50th+1 (Postponed from 2020 due to Covid) reunion on July 24, 2021 at the VFW Post 502. In attendance were 45 classmates and 18 guests from AZ, FL, IL, MI, NC, NY (Bridgeport, Catskill, Clay, Eaton, Gansevoort, Herkimer, Ilion, Kinderhook, Mohawk, Poughkeepsie, Richfield Springs, Rochester, Waterville, and Yorkville), OK, SC, TX, and VA.

A social hour was held outside under the pavilion at 4 PM with local favorites including tomato pie, B & W heroes, and half moon cookies. Master of Ceremonies classmate Dan OBrien then began the program inside with introductions and recognition of veterans from the class who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Classmate Reverend Stephen Mitchell then provided a blessing of the food. Mrs. Peg Fahy Hyland, former Junior High English teacher, was introduced. We then heard a message from our class advisor Ralph Bell who was unable to attend. After a moment of silence, a memorial service conducted by Reverend Stephen Mitchell included the reading of our 27 deceased classmates names along with lighting a candle for each. Displays included a memorabilia table including our yearbook, class will, class prophecy, sorority sweaters, letterman sweaters and jackets, commencement program, programs from previous reunions, and Mary Fitzer Morses' gymsuit! Also on display were group class photos from the five (Annunciation, East Frankfort, North Street, Weber Ave and West Hill) elementary schools; photos from various high school activities and previous reunions. Music was provided by IHS alum John Seymour for our dancing pleasure. A group picture was taken as well as smaller groups from each elementary school.

On Sunday, July 25 at 11 AM an informal get together was held at Blessed Sacrament Church with light refreshments. On the 24th, prior to the activities at the VFW, 16 classmates gathered at the monument for deceased classmates and faculty at Armory Hill Cemetery for a moment of silence and prayer. This group then took a tour of the renovated Central Valley Academy (formerly Ilion Junior Senior High School). (submitted by JoAnn Capes Richards August 18, 2021)

Condolences.....

Mr. Thomas William Bradle, IHS 1970, age 72, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, at the Abraham House in Rome, following an illness. At the time of his passing, Tom had the love and support of his family at his bedside. Born in Ilion on October 9, 1951, Thomas was the son of the late Richard W. and Marie Ann (Drennen) Bradle. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Ilion High School. Tom was employed with Remington Arms for forty years, where he made many lasting friendships amongst his co-workers. He retired after a lengthy career in the parts department. Tom had a love for music that he shared with those around him. He was especially fond of 50's and 60's era rock and roll. In his younger years, he even held aspirations of starting his own music group! He was a frequent concert-goer who had an interest in various musical instruments and loved to sing…even it was only to belt out a ‘Happy Birthday' tune! As a man who was constantly on the move, Tom kept busy by going to casinos, out to dinners and trying his luck at lottery tickets, which he won on quite often. He was fond of doing challenging, thousand-piece puzzles and playing games of Scrabble or Yahtzee with his family and friends. He also had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed visiting museums; his favorite being the JELL-O Gallery in Le Roy, New York! As a man of strong faith, Tom would often call his sister, Donna, who is a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet nun, asking her and the other sisters to pray for various people in Tom's life. He was well aware of the power of prayer and was convinced the nuns had an in with the guy upstairs! He attended the Stations of the Cross and participated in reconciliation with God. He had his own connection to Heaven through the loved ones who passed before him and he would often be found visiting various cemeteries throughout the valley; and could tell you where any one of his family members was buried. At one time, Tom shared in a marriage with Joyce Bradle, whom he traveled the country with. They enjoyed attending concerts, explored the Grand Canyon and even got to swim with the dolphins! Tom will be remembered as a kindhearted man who was a friend to everybody. He never had an unkind word and was open and honest; the type of friend who everyone wants to have. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed vacationing down south to visit his nephews and nieces. He was also a longtime member of the Ilion Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his siblings, Sister Donna Bradle, CSJ of Latham, Lorraine Chapman of Manlius, Annette Dunn of Herkimer and Richard Bradle of Ilion; his nieces and nephews, Steven (Lisa) Bradle, Christopher (Melanie) Bradle, Will Bradle, Stephanie (Gray) Andrews, Patrick Dunn, Ryan Carpenter, Richard Bradle, Shannon (Rob) Casta and Jeff (Sandy) Chapman; his special friend, Peg Perrone; great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Steven Bradle; and his brother-in-law, Jon Chapman. A special thank you is extended to the nurses and staff of the Abraham House in Rome for the care and compassion shown to Tom and his family throughout his illness and passing. Friend and relatives are invited to attend visitation on Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 2:00PM – 4:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. Tom's Vigil service will commence on Thursday, June 6th at 4:00PM at the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation. Committal prayers will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer on Friday morning, June 7th, 2024 at 10:00AM. He was a caring man with a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. No one could ask for a better husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin or friend. Ron was the very proud father of Ronald Francis Jr., Jeffrey Albert and Lucas Michael. He is the beloved brother of Gary DeCarr of Pennellville, Richard DeCarr of Syracuse, Wayne DeCarr of Warners, Patti Hermann of Syracuse, John DeCarr of Durhamville and Sheila Emerich of Ilion. Ron is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ron understood the importance of medical research for this rare disease and donated his tissue in the hopes of helping future patients with ALS. Karen Colburn Umber, age 50, passed away peacefully Nov. 25, 2002. Her beloved family surrounded her in her Scottsdale home when she lost her courageous battle with cancer. Karen was born Feb. 1, 1952, in Herkimer, N.Y., to Everett and Suzanne Colburn. Karen attended Ilion High School from 1967 to 1970, and Herkimer County Community College from 1970 to 1972. From 1974 through 1982, she worked at Syracuse Upstate Medical Center as executive secretary and administrative assistant in the Department of Medicine. Karen met her husband, Dennis, while she was vacationing in Arizona in 1981. After a two-year courtship that spanned between New York and Arizona, Karen and Dennis were married in 1984, and made Arizona their permanent residence. Karen worked for the Salt River Project from 1984 to 2000, and she most recently served as a medical staff assistant at Scottsdale Healthcare, Osborn and Shea campuses. Karen will be remembered for her compassion, everlasting happiness and her willingness to help others. Her personality exuded sunshine wherever she went. She valued her family most of all and she was a perfect wife and mother. Karen's interests included vocal music, the performing and visual arts, writing, the outdoors and aerobic exercising. She was a free spirit and would always jump at the opportunity to travel or take on a new experience. Karen loved all animals and especially her beloved Basenji, Snickers. Karen will be intensely missed, yet her memory and presence will always live on in all those who knew her. Karen is survived by her soul mate and husband, Dennis; her son, Blake; her mother, Suzanne Colburn of Ilion; her twin sister and brother-in-law, Donna C. and Brent D. Wheat and their daughters, Courtney and Gillian of Catskill; her sister, Patricia Colburn and her children, Amber and Abe of Ilion; her brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Judith Colburn and their children, Jenny and Josh of Murrieta, California; as well as three aunts, Ann Hildebrandt, Kristina Pollak and Marion Pollak; and several cousins and close friends in New York. She was preceded in death by her father, Everett Colburn of Ilion. Services were held at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, Ariz. As a memorial, donations can be made in Karen's name to the Virginia Piper Cancer Center and mailed to Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation, 10001 North 92nd St., Suite 121, Scottsdale, Ariz. 85258.
