Culinary Cookoff to benefit the Jan Burling Memorial Fund .....The Burling family will host its annual Chili, Soup, & Dessert contest to benefit the Jan Burling Memorial Fund on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 1pm to 3pm. The event will be held downstairs at the Ilion Elks and will include a Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffle. Following the judging everyone is encouraged to gather upstairs for music and entertainment. The event began approximately 11 years ago as a chili contest at the Burling home. True to her giving and caring nature, as Exalted Ruler of BPOE #1444, Jan moved the event to the Elks in 2018 and reinvented the house party as a fundraiser to help families in need in our community. Following Jan's passing in 2019, the Burling family were grateful to the many people who made donations to the Community Fund in Jan's memory and were moved when Elks leadership changed the Fund's name in her honor. The family now asks you to come out for a fun afternoon featuring some of Jan’s favorite things – food, parties, music, and community - in support of the Jan Burling Memorial Fund. Contest entry is free; it costs $5 to taste. Raffle tickets and auction tickets will be sold as well. All proceeds benefit the Jan Burling Memorial Fund. The contest will be judged by attendees who will enter a vote for their favorite entry in each division. Winners will receive a one-of-a-kind championship apron and bragging rights. To enter the chili, soup, or dessert contest or to donate a basket, message us or leave a comment on this page, you can also sign up at the Ilion Elks, just ask the bartender for the signup sheet. See Ilion High Class of 1971, administered by Mary Ann (Salvaggio) Hoffman. (May 18, 2021) REUNION UPDATE! from Karen (Entwistle) Urtz "Hi everyone, and thanks for getting back to us with your thoughts so we could make the best decision for all. It looks like Oct 9, 2021 works best, so we're proceeding with that as a firm date. Our choice of venues are limited if we want to stay local, which we think works best. But we did find a good one we hope you'll like!" "It's the M.V. Golf and Event Center and Tin Cup Tavern (formerly Mohawk Valley Country Club), 6069 NY-5, Little Falls. That's just outside of Herkimer towards Little Falls. Depending on how many we are, we may be inside or outside under the big tent. There will be heaters if needed. The view will be beautiful, everywhere you look with the fall foliage on full display... "Now that we have a date and place we'll start working on costs that will include dinner of course and we think a live band with people you probably know! We're thinking of other "things to do" if people are interested that will be at your own expense (i.e. golf, Herkimer canal cruise, new walking path along the canal from Ilion to Little Falls and beyond, and possible school tour? "So for now, hang tight, make travel reservations if necessary. More to come down the road, but we wanted to get this update out to you sooner than later. Please spread the word as there are many we haven't heard from who may not know about this. Hope you are all well....look forward to seeing you this year! (May 19, 2021)

CondolencesKurt Hendrick, IHS 1971 - Only Kurt would retire on a Friday, then start hospice the following Monday. There's a bitter-sweetness in that timing, but it's also a testament to the man he was: hardworking, dedicated, and always willing to help others, right up until the end. But let's be honest, Kurt was also a troublemaker, a jokester, and as stubborn as they come—yet his kindness shone through it all. Kurt was married to Debbie for nearly 42 years, had 3 children (Eric, Erin and Anne) and proudly watched over 7 grandchildren (Nicholas, Braden, VanLuke, Kurt, Chloe, August and Abraham). His career took him through the trades, where he put in countless hours of work, but it was at St Bruno that he found his second home. His wife Debbie had long been connected to St Bruno, first as a student, then as staff and a church musician, and Kurt was initially known to many as "Debbie's husband." But over time, something happened: Debbie found herself being introduced as "Mr. Kurt's wife." It was a shift that made them both smile—proof that Kurt had left his mark not just as a worker, but as someone whose presence and character touched those around him. Kurt was born to George Hendrick and Bernie Winchip in Herkimer, New York, on February 10th, 1953. Growing up alongside his younger brothers Mark and Paul, they created countless memories that shaped his quick wit and sense of humor. The famous Hendrick stubbornness was, of course, present from the start—something that became a defining family trait. Later, Kurt welcomed three more brothers: Brett Winchip, Hans Hendrick and Ehrich Hendrick. Though Kurt eventually lived far from his family, the bond they shared remained strong, and they always made time for each other. Later on, his mother Bernie found love with Dick Balser, who quickly became a cherished member of the family, building a close relationship with Kurt and his brothers, and the grandkids, over the years. Kurt's life was a testament to the values he held dear: family, friendship, humor, hard work and perseverance. His legacy lives on through the memories he created, the laughter he shared, and the strong bonds he formed with those he loved. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Kurt was recently preceded in death by his grandson Kurt Sumner Hendrick. As we grieve his loss, may we find comfort in the belief that he and his grandson are now joyfully reunited in the peace and love of God's eternal presence. A celebration of Kurt's life will be held at St. Bruno Church (226 W Ottawa Ave, Dousman, WI 53118) on Saturday, September 21, 2024, visitation from 8:00am-10:00am with a service to follow. Kurt will be buried at St. Bruno Cemetery following the service. (September 19, 2024)

Notable.....John Peterson was recognized, by his community of Glen Eliyn Ill, for his rescue of a 15 year old neighbor. On August 13, 2002, during a rainstorm, 15 year old neighbor Vicky Bedlek attempted to remove a bale of hay which was blocking a large drainage tube in the road. Water was overflowing the ditch and flooding the Bedleck's driveway. John Peterson arrived at home and began assisting Miss Bedlek. The two were able to remove the blockage, however, moments later Bedleck slipped and struck her head on a pitchfork that she had been using. Both of her legs went into the drainage tube and the strong suction, caused by the strong storm waters, began to pull her whole body inside. John grabbed her arms, preventing her from being sucked into the drainage tube completely. John's wife heard his calls for help and came and braced him as he held on to the girl. When the rain subsided, they were able to pull Bedlek from the tube. She only suffered minor scrapes and bruises. John needed eight stitches on a finger that was injured while removing the bale of hay. (September 28, 2002)

I've moved back to the Valley after living away for over 35 years. While living in California for most of that time was blissful, lifestyle changes made the move back east a reality. It took over 10 months to find and ultimately purchase the "perfect" house. As of July I officially became a real "429r" and Dolgeville resident. While living in Ilion, I never spent much time east of Herkimer. This has been a real experience getting into the very small town life. It sure isn't Berkeley, CA any longer!! How I miss the cuisine and cultural aspects of a large urban area BUT I know chances are slim to none of having a homeless person sleeping on my front porch now. The only scary thing is dodging ATV's zipping up the sidewalks and grass on their way to the trail up the hill from the house. I purchased an 1880 fully restored Victorian house complete with fish scale exterior, a butler pantry, built in china cabinets, stained glass windows, and most importantly recently gutted/remodel kitchen with a family room added to the back of the house. Look forward to hearing from members of the class of '71." (Oct 10, 2006) Beth Lynch, RN / Case worker, email, from Ilion, NY, registered.
