Jody Lynn (Tanner) Karla IHS 1995 age 32 of November Lane, Syracuse, an Ilion native, passed away on Friday evening, September 25, 2009 in Community General Hospital. Jody succumbed to a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis and was currently on the lung transplant list at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She was born on June 15, 1977 in Ilion, daughter of Allen and Janet (Busher) Tanner and was a graduate of Ilion High School. On August 14, 2004 she was united in Holy Matrimony with Sean Robert Karla at the United Methodist Church, Skaneateles. Their union of 5 years was based on both respect and commitment. Jody graduated cum laude from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and mathematics education. She was a graduate of LeMoyne College with a Master Degree in secondary education. While at Syracuse University, Jody was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and Eta Pi Upsilon Woman's Leadership Honorary. She was a student peer advisor for the School of Education and was a member of the Academy of Mathematics Education and was a member of the Academy of Mathematics Education. She was a recipient of the Chancellor's Scholarship and the Senior Honors Scholarship.

She continued her love of mathematics at Marcellus High School where she loved teaching for the past 10 years. At Marcellus, Jody served as a class advisor, mathematics league advisor, helped supervise school activities, and assisted with coaching. She was awarded the 'Mustang' award at Marcellus High School for excellence in teaching. Jody was also employed by Onondaga Community College as a math teacher for SAT exam students. Though Jody's life with us was short, she had a gift of reaching out to others and will be missed by all who knew her. Jody loved scrap booking, trips to their camp at Canadarago Lake and playing with her chocolate lab 'Reno'. Just as in her professional life, Jody considered the numerous and varied relationships in her personal life to be her greatest joy, her foremost responsibility and her most rewarding privilege. She had many loved friends and was an avid fan of the Syracuse University Orange, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Yankees. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking and number puzzles.

Survivors include her beloved family; her husband: Sean Karla of Syracuse; her parents: Al and Janet Tanner of Ilion; two sisters: Kerri Tanner of Saratoga Springs and Nicole (Tanner) Gadziala and husband Rudy of Selkirk; a special aunt: Lois Busher Arndt of Mohawk; a special niece: Marisol Annette Gadziala; father in law and mother in law: Robert and Norma Karla of Ilion; a sister in law: Jodi and Mark Arsenault of Newport; nephews: Tyler and Kyle Arsenault; and many loved cousins including: Kevin and David Arndt, Marc, Michael and Tara Tanner. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Henry and Harriet Busher and Ernest and Joan Tanner. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000 on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will commence at 11 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 from the Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion/Frankfort with the Rev. Brian Engel, pastor of Mohawk Reformed Church officiating. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery where she will be laid to rest. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the Cystic Fibrosis Association; envelopes may be obtained at the Enea Family Funeral Home. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Jody's family members and friends, for their supportive, caring, and thoughtful acts of sympathy during this difficult time; also to the Community General Hospital for their compassion. I am still working with Bank of America, just recently accepted a position as a Personal Banker in Wilton, CT. Wilton is a nice little town, very expensive to live in though... lol. I live in Danbury, which is less than 20 miles away, but due to the traffic in CT it takes around 45 minutes to get there. Haven't had the opportunity as of yet to go out much there, although I did just recently land a part at a local Opera House in Thomaston, CT for the musical Oliver. Hope everyone is doing well."

Cameron is getting so big! He is seven now and will be entering second grade in the fall. Jillian will be 3 on Friday and I can hardly believe my eyes at what a sass-a-frass she is turning into. She is in preschool and pretty much dominates her class. The boys bow to her! We bought a house and apartment living in finally behind us. I finally feel like a grown-up! I am coming home in the first part of July for my sister's baby shower --- yes that is correct...Samantha is having a baby! I hope to see some of you around the big city of Ilion. Toodles :)."

"Thinkin' bout some old times inspired me to check this site and see what was happening... It's interesting to see the paths that life follows for each individual knowing where we all come from and observing who has done what for themselves. For some, the reality seems all too typical and quite expected... for others completely surreal. As for me, you may feel free to come to your own conclusions..."

"Knowing well that there was little to offer me in the dreaded "valley" & feeling suffocated by the monotonous activities and lack of inspirational stimuli, 2 years ago my ambitions have lead me to create a change of atmosphere and move to Chicago. Things have been well as I'm finally making my break into the art world and creating a blissful existence as a professional artist. Currently I have several pieces on exhibit in galleries here in Chicago, as well as Boston & Maine. I've also been doing quite a bit of freelance work for people and musicians on the east coast;still finding time to volunteer as a counselor for people with developmental disabilities & interpreting sign language for deaf children.

"I'm hoping that some old friends who don't know how to contact me see this and get a bug up their ass to drop me a line. I'd be awesome to hear from you!!!! especially if you're gonna be in the Chicago area, I've got a whole house to myself & love visitors!!! Live, Love, & Breathe deeply... Peace"

"Hi! People have been talking about the Ilion Website, so I thought I'd check it out. In May I graduated from Geneseo State. I spent the summer at the camp that I've worked at for the past 3 years and now, I'm living in Owego, NY. It's very "quaint", more so than Ilion. I'm working as a Speech Therapist at an elementary school. I work with children in K-5 and am having a great time. This episode will only last until January 31, 2000, however, when I head to the Dominican Republic as a Special Education Provider with the Peace Corps. I'm not exactly sure what I'm getting myself into, so if you know anything about it, please LET ME KNOW!! I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday and the year 2000 brings more of the successes that I'm reading about!" - Alyson
