Ilion - The proposal that Ilion school district expend about $21,000 this year of the proceeds from the sale. of the old Morgan Street School brings back the memories of that institution to many elderly residents of Ilion.

The school was originally a stone building and was the second school in the village. The first is still standing in Main St., but is now part of a private dwelling.

Started in 1850

It took the taxpayers two years to make up their minds about a new building. It was proposed in January, 1848 but was not started until 1850. A brick addition, much larger than the stone building was constructed in 1850. It cost $23,000 and for years was the most imposing school house in this part of the Mohawk Valley.

The stone building was not used as a school for a time. The Ilion Cornet Band and the No. 1 Fire Company used it for meetings and the First Liberal Christian Society for a library. Later increased attendance caused it to be reopened for the kindergarten and primary grades.

New Addition In '81

Another addition was built in 1881. It consisted of a tier of recitation rooms built on the southeast corner of the main building. A tower room on the third floor was made into an office and library. An office on the ground floor was built in 1900 and a $7,000 addition the same year brought relief from overcrowding.

When the present high school building was completed in 1921 the Morgan Street School was sold and razed to make room for the Municipal Building.

The cornerstone was salvaged and is housed at the Public Library. The school bell is in the high school library together with a plaque in memory of the late E. A. Powers, member of the Board of Education and in charge of buildings from 1874 until his death a few years ago. Three of the four present janitors of the local schools have worked at the Morgan Street School.

School Cornerstone Box Opened After 50 Years

ILION - A dramatic ceremony was held by Ilion Central School Board at close of the meeting last night when William Hughes, president, used a huge pair of pliers to cut open a cornerstone box placed at the corner of Ilion High School about 50 years ago.

The box, measuring about 1 1/2 feet long and about eight inches deep, was taken from the part of the high school now being demolished to make way for a new high school.

It was set in place in the autumn of 1913, according to musty and mildewed records found inside. The high school was opened to students the following year.

The high school, part of which was destroyed by fire about a year ago, was built on a three and one-third acre site purchased for about $4,000, according to the records. The school was built with a $96,000 bond issue.

The box was crammed with records, including copies of the Ilion News and Ilion Citizen, newspapers no longer in existence. The copies were dated April 11, 1912.

A poll list of the 1,248 voters who approved the $95,000 bond issue referendum was included. Hughes, examining the booklet, was surprised to find his mother, Salena, on the list.

Construction at the new high school started in Aug. 1964 to replace facilities lost in the fire of April 21, 1963. Included in the rebuilt section is the auditorium, gym, library, music rooms, language lab, and homemaking section.
