Frances (Sanders) Streeter, Class of 1950, wrote the headline article "Old Man Measles" on The Loose, Spending a Lot of Time at School for The Ilion Sentinel in 1949.

The measles vaccine is recommended to anyone born after 1957. The CDC also recommends people who were vaccinated between 1963 and 1967 get a second vaccine. "Of those who received one dose of the vaccine, 5 percent will not be immunized and they may not even know it. A second dose of the vaccine is recommended to people who are at higher risk of contracting measles, including healthcare workers, people who travel internationally and students....The only way to know if you are immune to measles is through a blood test, but Wang said it is easier to simply get another dose of the vaccine." On May 26, 1949, Harold Whittemore, publisher of The Ilion Sentinel, proposed that the high school Quill staff submit a weekly article to be published in his newspaper. A vote was taken to determine if The "Golden Quill" would be discontinued and replaced with a regular high school page in The Sentinel. The ballot also included a proposal to replace the school publication, "The Quill", with a school magazine to be published twice a year, by the School Press Club.
