Dr. Henry Hunter Dies

 

The death of Dr. Henry J. Hunter, 73, dean of Ilion physicians, occurred Friday, January 2, 1942, at his home, 100 Morgan street, after a long illness.

Dr. Hunter was one of Ilion's best known physicians and surgeons. For 15 years, he was village health officer, and was a member of the Board of Education for a number of years. He was also a member of the Board of Health.

Native of Ilion

He was born in Ilion, July 11, 1868, son of William and Henrietta Van Gumpster Hunter. Graduated, from Ilion High School, he attended Albany Medical School and Syracuse University Medical School. He was graduated from the University of Baltimore Medical School and served his internship in Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore.

Following completion of his medical education, he opened a practice for a short time in New Haven, Conn., moving from there to Dalton, Mass. In 1899, he returned to Ilion, where he had since practiced.

On May 22. 1891, he married Miss Lydia Shoemaker, in Chatham, N.Y. They observed their golden wedding anniversary last May.

Native of Ilion

Dr. Hunter performed his first operation in the old Herkimer hospital. He performed many operations, both in Herkimer and Ilion hospitals. He was a member of the Herkimer County Medical Society. He attended the Ilion Baptist church.

Mrs. Hunter survives, with two sons, Charles E., Syracuse, and Walter C. Illon; two brothers, the Rev. William Hunter, Mt Sini. L.I. and Charles E. Hunter, Lockport, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the home, with the Rev. P. W. Ainslie, Baptist pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. R. Benson, rector of St. Augustine's Episcopal church. Burial will be in Armory Hill cemetery
