Mrs. Mack, Civic Worker, Dies in Ilion

Ilion - Mrs. Helen [Genevieve] Mack, 74, for 22 years a member of the Board of Education and an outstanding church and civic worker, died unexpectedly last night at her home, 10 McCann St.

She was at one time a teacher in the Morgan St. School and in 1923 was elected to the Board of Education. After serving one term she retired from the board but in 1928 again was chosen a member. She has served continuously since then.

She completed her fourth term as board president in 1947. She served for many years oh the teacher's committee of the board.

Mrs. Mack was born in Mohawk daughter of Thomas and Mary Dowd McCann. The family moved to Ilion when she was 11 and she graduated from Ilion High School in 1890. In 1893 she graduated at Oswego Normal School.

Morgan St. Principal

Her first position was as teacher in the Morgan St. school where she was later named principal. She taught science in the high school retiring about 36 years ago.

For many years she sang in the choir of the Church of the Annunciation of which she was a member. She was a past president of he Ilion Council of Catholic Women; a member of the Altar Rosary Society of the church; of the Catholic Daughters of America; the Travelers Club of Ilion and of the New Century Club of Utica.

Past P-TA Leader

She was an honorary member of the North St. school P-TA; a past president of the High School P-TA and the P-TA Central Council; a member of the disbanded Annunciation School P-TA and held several P-TA offices in the district.

She married Everett V. Mack in August, 1903, in Ilion. He died three years ago.

She leaves one son, Everett V. Mack, a student in Syracuse University medical school; one sister, Miss Helen R. McCann, Ilion; three grandchildren; three nieces and several cousins.

Funeral services will be Friday at 9 a. m. from the home and at 9:30 a. m. from the Church of the Annunciation where a solemn requiem high mass will be held. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.

Note - The newspaper article listed her first name as Helen but it actually was Genevieve. She had a sister, Helen, who graduated in 1896.
