The Ilion Citizen Ilion High School - Class of 1897

First Recital Class of '97

The first recital of the class of '97, Ilion high school, occurred on Friday evening. The exercises were held in the high school rooms, the stage of which was tastefully decorated with the class colors, orange and purple. The audience was an appreciative one and, in point of numbers, filled almost every seat in the large room. In several of the musical numbers on the program the class was very kindly assisted by Mrs. Bella F. Osgood, Miss Brand, Charles Comstock and John Harris, the music both vocal and instrumental, forming a delightful feature of the evening. The Mexic drill, by the lady members of the class, was given to illustrate a beautiful poem, "The Angel of Buena Vista," as read by Miss Douglass, and proved a very graceful piece of acting, the evolutions and movements being performed with precision and in fine taste. The declamations by the gentlemen of the class were all of a high order and richly deserve the warm applause accorded to each. Where all did so well it seems hardly just to discriminate, but the efforts of Messrs. Comstock, Halliwell and Carney could be mentioned as among the best of the evening.

The members are Arnon Comstock, Leroy Shinaman, Harry Halliwell, Thomas Carney, William Wilfert, Joseph Diss, Frank Jenne, George Edick, Edward Baker, Lucius Robson, Mande Burch, Etta Cox, Maude Gay, Jennie Heiland, Carrie Jochmus, Lena Keller, Catherine Nunn and Emma White.
