Leo H. Powers, 73, Dies at Ilion Desk ILION - Leo H. Powers, 73, of 61 Third St., president of The Ilion Savings & Loan Association for the past 12 years and one of the village's leading citizens, died unexpectedly yesterday at his office desk. He had been treated for the past several years for a heart ailment. A native of Ilion, Mr. Powers was widely known and active in many area activities. He has held some of the highest banking offices in the state. He was born in Ilion, son of Edward and Mary Powers. He married twice. His first wife, Genevieve Race, whom he married in 1915, died in 1957. He married Ruth Prindle here in 1958. He began working for the Ilion Savings & Loan Association in 1903 as an office boy. He became a secretary of the organization in 1921 and a director in 1925. He has been president of the association since Jan. 19, 1950. He was dean of Savings & Loan executives of New York State and past president and director of the former Ilion National Bank. He was on the current board of directors of Marine Midland Trust Co. of the Mohawk Valley. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, and its Holy Name Society; BPO Elks, Ilion Community Club, Ilion Conversation Club, Mohawk Valley Country Club, Ilion Shakespeare Club, Fort Schuyler Club of Utica. Mr. Powers was a charter member of the Ilion Little Theater Club and a charter member of the Ilion Tennis Club. He was also president of the Board of Park Commissioners and was working on an expansion program for Russell Park. He was chairman of local Draft Board 409 since its inception, and was active in organizing the original Ilion Chamber of Commerce. He leaves his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Thomas P. Dowling, Fort Wayne, Ind., and three sons John R. Powers and Charles F. Powers, both of Wilmington, Del., and Richard K. Powers, Ilion. The funeral will be at 8:30 Monday from the Applegate Funeral Home and at 9 from the Church of the Annunciation where a solemn requiem high Mass will"be offered. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral will be tonight and all day tomorrow.
