- Children not Allowed to Attend Picnics
Ilion - June 25 - Dr. Herbert D. Pease, director to the anti-toxin and hygienic laboratories of the State Health Department came to this village last evening and had a consultation with the board of health and other officials relative to the recent epidemic of diphtheria here. At the conclusion of Dr. Pease's investigation he gave permission to the board of health to permit the holding of the high school graduating commencement exercises in the Opera house this evening. He also said there was nothing to prevent the holding of church services, concerts, etc. now. But he advised that the Sunday schools and the library remain closed and that there be no picnics or other functions at which children would congregate. He also advised that persons in which families there had been contagion remained away from the commencement exercises. Dr. Pease's visit was the result of a trip to Albany made yesterday by Prof. C. A. Springstead who presented to the state department of health a petition signed by the members of the school board, the board of health and the graduating class asking that the authorities permit the graduating exercises to be held.
