59 Get Diplomas At Ilion High School Commencement

Diplomas Awarded 59 at Ilion School; Juniors Win Trophy

Seniors Lose Stone & Luke Cup for First Time
'Wimby' Scott Adjudged Most Valuable Ball Player
and Frank Getman Best Debater - Lever Prize to Furlong.

Ilion, June 27 - A capacity audience attended the class of 1928 Ilion High School commencement last night at the Capitol Theater, when 59 members graduated.

The stage, holding the graduates, was banked in flowers. J. G. Prindle, principal, awarded the prizes as follows:

English: Zona Kenney and Dorothy Hailston; mathematics, Eleanor Parsons and Orien Simmons; history, Frederick Joiner and Doris Kenyon; commercial, Arvon Jones and Louise Hartleb; language. Zona Kenney and Dorothy Hailston; science, Orien Simmons and Spencer Palmer: American history, Zona Kennedy, $2.50 from American Legion Auxiliary; dramatics, Harlan Shoemaker $2.50 from Herkimer County section of teh Council of Jewish Women; art, Frederic Hofmann; music, Clara Scott; home economics, Vivian DuBois; manual training, John Hanson.

Getman Best Debater

The Junior class wrested the Stone & Luke cup from the seniors for the first time.

William "Wimby" Scott was awarded the Stephenson & Mallery baseball cup, being judged the most valuable player.

The Harold "Boots" Lever cup was awarded to Remington Furlong, for scholarship and athletics.

The Dason debating trophy was awarded to Frank Getman, judged the most valuable member of the club.

The prizes, other than those designated were $10 gold pieces, donated by the Remington Cash Register Company, Remington Arms Company, Remington Rand Company, Ilion National Bank, Manufacturers National Bank, Ilion Lodge B.P.O.E., Ilion Council Knights of Columbus; Ilion Lodge, F.& A.M.; Ilion Building and Loan Association and Alex Fobinston.

E. P. Watkin, superintendent, presented the diplomas.

Following is the program: Invocation, the Rev. L. R. Benson; The History of Ilion," Arnette Watson: "... in American History," Dorothy Hamm.

Songs, Glee Club: "The Value of a Commercial Education,: Louise Hartleb; valedictory, Zona Kennedy: vocal solo, Elizabeth Rhodes; award of prizes,, Principal J. G. Prindle; presentation of diplomas, Superintendent E. P. Watkin: benediction, the Rev. L. R. Benson.
