Prizes are Awarded to Ilion Hi Pupils at Commencement

Exercises Are Attended by About 1,500 at Capitol Theater When Principal Prindle Gives Gold to Deserving Students – Supt. Watkin Speaks of State Survey Report

Ilion - Commencement of Ilion High School last night at the Capitol Theater was attended by about 1,500.

The graduating class marched through the aisles to the stage, where members were seated.

The commencement opened with the following program: American March, by Cauer, and Mountain Laurel, by Allen, by the high school orchestra; class song was sung by Miss Lillian Singer, with the accompaniment of the orchestra; invocation by the Rev. L. R. Benson; salutatory Thomas Ringwood, "Radioland," Mary Tuttle; "The Power of a Great Ideal," William Milsted; "The Emotional and Picturesque in Music," Eleanor Tucker; "What Price Progress," Martin Barnes; "Heroes," valedictory, Mary Wasmer; "The White Queen Overture" was played by the orchestra.

Principal Awards Prizes

The following students won prizes in the following subjects, first prize being $10 and second prize $5: English, Eleanor Tucker, first; Thomas Ringwood, second; mathematics, Mary Wasmer, first; Alonzo Rivers, second; history, Robert B. Kerr, first; Thomas Ringwood, second; language, Mary Wasmer, first; Thomas Ringwood, second; science, Thomas Ringwood, first; Helen Maury, second; commercial, William Milsted, first; Beatrice Myers, second.

The following students won prizes in the following subjects, first prize being $5 in the following subjects: Art, Gertrude Dexter*, music, John Gleason; manual training, Lincoln Russell*; home economics, Marion Armstrong*. Other prizes were awarded as follows: American History, $3.50, William Milstead, donated by the American Legion Auxiliary; and dramatics, $3.50, Richard Seiler, donated by the Herkimer County Council of Jewish Women.

Honor "I" pins were awarded to the following students: Martin Barnes, Clark Bergin, Eleanor Dewhurst, Dorothy Garber, John Gleason, Vivian Goldthwaite, Charles Hemenway, George Jackson, Vincent Mack, Helen Maury, William Murphy, Beatrice Myers, Thomas Ringwood, Marion Rockwell, Richard Seiler, Lillian Singer, Pearl Singer, Robert Smith, Eleanor Tucker, Mary Tuttle, Mary Wasmer, Harvey M. Watson and Everett Wilbert. In order to obtain this honor pin the student must obtain at least 90 points in scholarship, arts and athletics and citizenship.

The Lever trophy which was donated to the Ilion High School by a former student, Harold "Boots" lever, was won by Donald Martin.

The Stone & Luke scholarship trophy was won by the class of 1930.

Talks on School Survey

Following the awarding of prizes, Superintendent, E. P. Watkin gave a talk on the report of the State Survey Committee. Mr. Watkin spoke briefly of the school boundaries involving Ilion, East Frankfort and Old Forge school districts. The figures presented showed non-residents in the Ilion schools to be 155, of whom 64 are in the grades and of the 85 are from North Ilion and 6 from the Ilion Gorge School.

Ninety-one non-residents are in Ilion High School, and of these 21 are from the North Ilion, 17 from Old Forge Road district, and 53 from East Frankfort. Mr. Watkin also gave other statistics, which he announced would be published in a bulletin, and he urged those owning property to obtain one. This bulletin will be ready in a short time.

After giving his talk on the report of the state survey, he made a short talk to the graduating class, after which he presented the diplomas.

The final benediction was given by Ray L. R. Benson.
