Ilion Again Tops Central Leaguers Win Gridiron Championship By Nosing Out Fulton High, 8 To 6. Ilion High School, unbeaten during the last three football seasons, retained the Central League championship by eking out an 8 to 6 decision over a hard-fighting Fulton High team Saturday on the U. F. A. athletic field in Utica. Ilion won the title from Rome in 1927 and shared it with Oswego last season. But Ilion was hard pressed to conquer the fighting band of red Jerseyed players whom Coach "Andy" Anderson brought down from Fulton Saturday. With but three minutes remaining in the game and Fulton leading, 6 to 2, Ilion aided by two official decisions, shoved over its winning touchdown. Ilion scored first, early in the game when Chubb, Fulton punter kicking from behind his own goal line into a stiff, cold wind which swept the field, got away a short boot which the wind carried back over the goal line. Chubb made a very smart football move when he recovered the ball himself behind the line for a safety to prevent Ilion from falling on it for a touchdown. The next score came in the third period when Fulton took the ball away from Ilion on downs deep in its own territory and opened with an serial attack. Holt tossed a long pass to Chubb who raced 80-yards through the entire Ilion team behind hastily-formed, but effective, interference tor the first touchdown of the game. Ilion's winning touchdown came in the closing minutes of play when two aerial heaves, which officials approved over the protests of the fans, aided Ilion in advancing the ball from midfield to Fulton's 2-yard stripe from where Stinson plunged over the winning tally. Musccalino, captain and center of the Fulton team, played a brilliant game and was all over the field making tackles. Although out weighed almost ten pounds to a man, the little Fulton team outfought Ilion all the way although the down valley team had a wide edge in first downs and yards gained. Following the game the Fulton and Ilion players, along with some 500 schoolboy athletes from Rome, Oswego, Oneida, Watertown, Herkimer, Little Falls, Camden, New Hartford, Whitesboro, Frankfort, Mohawk, Dolgeville and Hamilton gathered at the Hotel Martin for the annual sportsmanship banquet. Charles E. Riley, principal of Oswego High, presided as toastmaster, and Dan J. Kelley, former head of the physical education department at Harvard, delivered the principal address. Can Chase, former head of physical education in New York state, spoke briefly on sportsmanship, Prentiss Bailey, publisher of Utica Observer-Dispatch, presented to Rome Free Academy the championship baseball trophy donated by that paper. Three victories are necessary to gain permanent possession of the cup. Francisco Penberthy presented the Michigan Alumni football trophy to Ilion's victorious team. Baseball. Runner-Up Cup - Ilion.
