Retired USAF Officer Dies 1938 Class President Charles Travis

 

Retired USAF Officer Dies

ILION - Charles Travis, 37, of 378 Second St., a retired major in the U. S. Air Force, died unexpectedly yesterday while en-route to the Veterans Hospital, Syracuse.

He had been ill for several years in his home following his return from overseas service.

Born May 10, 1920 in Little Falls, he was a son of Ross and Myrtle Patterson Travis. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1938 and from Yale University in 1951. He was class president during his senior year in the high school.

On July 19, 1947, he married Anna L. Smith of Ilion. He was employed at the Manufacturers National Bank at one time and served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1947. Following graduation from Yale, he reentered the service retiring in 1956.

Mr. Travis was a member of the First Methodist Church; Ilion Masonic Lodge; Ilion Elks; Ilion American Legion and the Little Theater Club.

He leaves his wife and one son, Ross; one sister, Mrs. Eleanor Gamsey, also of Ilion; one nephew, two nieces and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 2 p. m. Monday from the Whiter Funeral Home with the Rev. Carlton Van Ornum, Methodist minister, officiating.

Interment will be in Armory Hill Cemetery.

Members of the family have requested in lieu of flowers, friends make donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis.
