Ilion College Student Cycles Home for Vacation

Ilion - The late Dr. A. Kendrick Osgood walked from the Buffalo Dental School to Herkimer, 225 miles, each June after he completed his year's studies.

That record of getting home from college without much expense impressed his son and now Charles Osgood, 134 Second, has returned from Brown University for the second time, not walking, but by bicycle.

The late dentist wanted to see that happen and he did the summer before he died. This year, Charles has repeated in keeping up what he believe is a good habit.

Sees More Country

He maintains that you see much more of the country and what each | little town regards as its special beauty spot; that you save money, and that you have a good start on a vacations well as getting plenty of exercise.

He should know for this summer he pedaled 451 miles in about four and a half days with a classmate to the Ilion home. The year before he and the classmate, Thomas Cary, had pedaled 200 miles in two and a half days to Cary's home at Oscawana, on the Hudson.

In that time, they found that bicycling was a lot of fun, but that there were certain set rules to be followed, particularly about eating and sleeping. You must get a comfortable place to sleep, get up early, and have definite goals. You must eat a substantial breakfast and carry oranges with you as you go along to cool you and refresh you.

Should Carry Camera

You should also carry a camera, for you can record your many memories for future recollection. Charles has many pictures and they have proven very popular with his classmates at Brown, in Providence, R. I., where he will go back as a senior in the fall.

They also had to learn that motorists do not realize what are smooth roads, high hills and beauty spots because the motorists glide by in smooth shock-absorbed cars so fast that they can't see the beauty.

Beautiful Scenery

The first trip took the young men through Connecticut as the marveled at the beauty of homes in Western Connecticut and along the famed New York and eastern parkways. ...
