Murray In GOP Race For Mayor Of Ilion ILION — Bernard Murray, Ilion school teacher, will head a slate of Republican candidates seeking nomination to village offices. Murray, a veteran village trustee, will seek the two-year mayoralty post which is also being sought by incumbent Democrat John B. Morris.
Edson J. Wood will seek reelection as trustee for two years and Robert Reynolds, a new comer to politics, the two year trustee post now held by incumbent George Long, Democrat. Donald S. Alexander is asking re-election to his fourth term as village assessor on the Republican ticket. The four candidates were endorsed yesterday by the Ilion Republican Committee. The village election is March 4. Murray of 4 George St., is a science teacher in Ilion Central High School. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and did graduate work at Utica College and Alfred University. Prior to teaching he was a planning specialist for General Electric Co.. Utica, and was also employed by the Ilion Light Commission. He served as a village trustee for six years, declining to run last year. He is a member of Ilion Elks Lodge, Ilion Memorial Post, American Legion, the Holy Name Society of Church of Annunciation and the Northside Athletic Club. He has two daughters and two sons. Wood, a resident of Ilion since 1921, graduated from Ilion High School in 1926 and has been employed by Sperry Rand UNIVAC for the last 33 years. He was elected to the trusteeship two years ago. He and his wife, Katherine, have three sons, Gary and Leonard and Edson Jr., who is studying for the priesthood at Villanova University. He and his family live at 7 Park St. Wood is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Ilion American Legion Post. Reynolds was born in Ilion the son of Charles and Edna Reynolds. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1941 and received a master mechanic's certificate from Automotive State of New York. Reynolds has been a partner in the Reynolds and Lester Service Station for the last 15 years. He served in the Navy four years during World War II and was discharged as a chief mechanics mate. He married the former Leola Lester and the couple has three daughters and a son. They live at 90 N. Third Ave. He is a member of the Church of Annunciation, its Holy Name Society, Elks Lodge and is a volunteer fireman with Company I. Alexander has been an assessor since 1960. He has been a resident of Ilion for more than 25 years and, has served in various capacities including the special police and as a member of the traffic and safety commission. He is employed at Remington Arms Co. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, First United Methodist Church and is active in church organizations. He also served as vice president of the Ilion Council of Churches and as a member of the Adult Education Committee of Ilion Central School. He and his wife, Catherine, have a daughter, Mrs. Russell Markley of Ilion and a son, Donald Alexander of Herkimer. They live at 61 Second Ave.
