Grads Urged to "Put a Heart" Into Today's Scientific Knowledge "The world today has been made by a head - put a heart in it", was Dr. Orva Lee Ice's advice and appeal to the Ilion High School Graduating class at the commencement exercises at the Capitol Theatre Tuesday evening. Speaking on the subject, "Knowledge Is Not Enough," Dr. Ice stressed the frightening gap between the scientific knowledge possessed today and the moral and spiritual techniques needed to make use of that knowledge. An interesting departure form the custom of recent years was the use of two members of the graduating class direct musical numbers. William Irwin directed the processional march by the orchestra and Dorothy Fear directed the 1946 members of the choir in singing the Alma Mater. In addition to the 79 members of the class, (the smallest since 1929) 18 returned service personnel, including one girl, earned diplomas after attending special classes under George Finnegan, himself a returned veteran. The program opened with a selection by the orchestra, "The Graduate," under the direction of Robert Hubbell. Milton Haughton, gave the salutatory, "Unity or Disaster," and Fern Chismore's valedictory was "Equality and World Peace." Dr. Ice's address followed two numbers by the choir and was in turn followed by an orchestra selection. The Rev. John B. Harmon, gave the invocation and the benediction. Principal J. Guy Prindle awarded the prizes and Grover W. Radley, president of the board of education, and Superintendent Earl P. Watkin, presented the diplomas. English - Fern Chismore; Richard Heaps.
