Ilion Couple's Two Sons Win Special Honors

ILION - The 1956 Thanksgiving season has taken on additional meaning for Mr., and Mrs. John Remmels 31 Maple Pl., since twice during the past two weeks they have been notified of outstanding honors to their two sons.

The first was notification John A. Remmell, 19, a senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, had been honored with membership In a national society in mechanical engineering.

Their oldest son, Robert, then was sworn in before the Appellate Division in Rochester and announcement was made he will be an associate in the law firm of Cross-Steates, Utica.

Both boys attended Ilion schools, Robert, a 1948 graduate while John's class was 1953.

Following graduation from High School, Robert, who was 25 years old Jan. 15, entered the United States Army receiving his discharge in 1950 with the rank of corporal.

He began study in 1950 at Utica College and during his third year earned a New York State Veteran's Scholarship.

At this time, he accepted a position with the Oneida National Bank and Trust Company and transferred to the evening division at college.

By September, 1953, Robert decided to transfer to Syracuse University and under the combination Law School program was able to earn his BS Degree in Accounting in 1954 and began study of law, thus enabling him to graduate in June, 1956, with a LLB Degree.

His first try at the bar examination was successful and he is already established in the Utica are having taken up residence at 10 Carlisle Ave., Utica.

During his four years in college, Robert worked for the bank, wrote for the Law Review Book, assisted the U. S. district attorney in Syracuse and devoted some time to legal aid in the Syracuse area.

He is a member of Delta Phi Sigma, an accounting society; Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and several times was on the Dean's list.

In 1952, he was cited as the "Outstanding Sophomore" in the Business and Economic Division of Utica College and was presented the Graziano Memorial Award.

He met his wife, the former Barbara Stucko, Utica, while studying at the college and they were married in June, 1954.

Mrs. Remmell holds an Associate Bachelor of Science Degree.

John was selected to membership in Pi Tau Sigma on the basis of engineering ability as well as scholarship and interest in school and an engineering course.

In addition, he was honored with membership in Tau Beta Pi, honorary engineering fraternity for ranking among the upper fifth of his class and for bringing distinction to the school through scholarship.

Mr. and Mrs Remmell also have two daughters, Mary Jane and Penny, both at home.

Mary Jane is currently serving as president of Rho Chapter Beta Chi and is a senior in Ilion High School while Penny is 10 and a fifth grader in North Street School.

Mr. Remmell is well known as a heating and plumbing expert.
