Ilion's "Golden Quill" Selected as Top High School Paper

Paper's Staff Is Commended For Excellent Work

Top rating of All New York was awarded "The Golden Quill," Ilion High School's mimeographed newspaper, according to the recent announcement of results of the Better School Newspaper Contest, conducted annually by the Empire State School Press Association.

Although the "Superior" rating has been won in the past and for the last two years of its publication it is believed that "All New York", has not been awarded previously, to the "Golden Quill" in its competition with other newspapers in its type in schools of comparable size.

Judged in qualities of news coverage, writing, make-up, headlines and quality of duplication, the Quill had a perfect score of 110 points. The general summary gave a perfect score also to these questions: 1. Does the paper show initiative and originality: 2. Is it good advertising for the school; 3. Is any part of paper exceptionally well done, here the comment was "generally excellent."

Editor-in-chief this year, and recently appointed also to head the Mirror, staff, is Sylvia Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Miller D. Reed, of 6 Orchard Street.

Marian Dashner is managing editor; Mary Alice Mosher, business manager; Jo-Ann Wilson, art editor; Frances Sanders, feature editor; Alan Momberger, and Robert Getman, sports editor; Bob Bouchie, photographer; Jean Nelson, Carol Hathaway, and Doris Wheeler, Production editors; Nancy Harter, Matilda Faulkner, Peggy Russell, Humor editors; Mary Jane Damon, Georgette Dayton, Alumni editors; Maxine Smith, exchange editor

Under the supervision of Miss Nelle Schmidt, who has been advisor of the staff for the last four years, the Quill has shown a steady increase in rating in this contest.

The Golden Quill staff feels very proud of themselves for being awarded the All New York rating by the Empire State School Press Association.

We may as well confess that we put a special effort behind this contest issue to make it "tops." Of course all our issues wouldn't have received this top rating, but we feel that we have proven our ability to do so.

There are many things involved when it comes to publishing a top rate paper. Let us name a few of the essential equipment necessary in publishing a school paper: Primarily, the mimeograph machine and the elite typewriter. The one and only mimeograph machine in the school is used by classes and teachers incessantly and many times the Quill staff has had to work nights in order to meet the deadline set. Furthermore the overworked machine is not in perfect running condition, and much time is often wasted. The "three" elite typewriters owned by the school are in the same working condition as the mimeograph machine. Above all the staff itself is a very active group engaged in every other activity in the school and often their time has to be budgeted also.

The main reason for this Sentinel issue is a "breather" for the staff. By the next month we hope to have purchased a small mimeograph machine to be used exclusively in publishing the Golden Quill.

With our new mimeograph machine not only do we plan on top rating Golden Quill publications in the future, but also a semi-annual magazine.

Alan Momberger Takes Examination For West Point

Recently the Class of 1950 has been honored by having one of its members, Alan Momberger, receive an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. As the result of examinations taken from March 6-10, Alan will know whether he has been accepted to the Academy or not.

During his high school years, Al has won acclaim for his marks and versatility. He was chosen as a member of the Junior National Society in his freshman an d sophomore years, and a member of the Senior National Honor Society during his last two years.

Sports has been one of Alan's interests. He was assistant manager for the football team as a junior, and manager as a senior. Other fields that attracted him were baseball, bowling, volleyball, basketball and swimming.

As a Junior, Al helped make the Junior Variety Show a success as interlocutor. He was co-chairman of the Prom Committee and was chosen as a delegate to Boy's State.

Al was president of his junior and senior homerooms. He has been a member of the "Golden Quill" for four years, now serving as sports editor.

Science interested Alan in joining the Phy Chy Club, of which he is now president.

Having recently been appointed to the "Mirror" Staff, he will no doubt help make this year's annual one of the best, as Al has helped his class in the past.

Jane Russell As Pretty As Her Namesake

A senior girl, known for leadership qualities and school activities, is Jane Russell. Ever since her Freshman year, she has been active in choir, swing wing and orchestra. Besides being in these musical activities, which have played an important part in her school life; Jane has played basketball on the Renaissance for 3 years; and she was a member of the Girls' Athletic Council in her Freshman year. As a junior, Jane cheered for the J.V. team and as a senior, she was chosen the head-cheerleader of the varsity squad.

Jane's trips to Annapolis have marked her as a woman of the world to some of us. These trips involve the complicated job riding from Grand Central to Pennsylvania station for some this alone would be a broad experience for anyone.

Besides all her activities, Jane has managed to squeeze in playing the piano for the children at West Hill, North Street, and Annunciation schools. On the whole, we agree that Jane is a very versatile girl and will go places after she graduates.
