Ilion High School Letter Winners To Be Feted May 23rd at Elks' Club

Varsity Club Plans All Sports Fete For May 23rd

Support from local clubs not withstanding, the Varsity is going along with plans for the first all sports letter winners banquet at the Elk's Club on Tuesday, May 23 it was announced last night by Arvon Jones, general chairman.

Out of 26 letters sent out to local organizations asking help on the promotion of this fete, only 10 were answered by the various clubs contacted.

Jones also announced that Alva Kelly, formerly of Cornell, and now head line coach at Yale, will be the principal speaker, with Ilion Police Judge Tom Morris serving as Toastmaster. It is hoped that Kelly will bring his successor as Cornell End Coach, Walt Bruska of Mohawk, to the banquet together with movies of one of Cornell's games of last year.

This banquet is an experiment with the Varsity Club. In the past seasons they have made it a practice to fete the football team, win, lose or draw. Many fans and parents were complaining that they could see no reason for banqueting just one team when there were so many other sports at the school, so this banquet is the result. It will fete the letter winners in track, football, baseball and basketball, as they are the major sports and the ones on which most time is spent on hours and hours of practice. The cheerleaders will also be guests.

Present plans call for the presentation of an 'Oscar' to each letterman. the 'Oscars' will be little statuettes made up in the form of an athlete in each port in which the athlete is winning his letter. For instance, a track letterman will receive a statuette with a track suit.

It was also announced that all organizations who have promised money towards this affair who have not yet sent their checks, please do so at once as the plans are now proceeding rapidly.
