Dick Lewis, Dave Getman, Bob Houseknecht Honored Our last assignment as a SENTINEL staffer was one of the most pleasant we had during our lengthy stay as a member of the crew here. It was to cover the presentation of trophies to three of the nicest lads in the Senior class at Ilion High, Bobbie Houseknecht, Dave Getman, and Dick Lewis. Houseknecht won the Varsity Club (or Unsung Hero Trophy), Lewis, the Rocky Cramer Memorial Trophy, and Getman the Frank Lyons Memorial. In winning the Unsung Hero Award, Houseknecht joins a long group of Ilion athletes who have claimed this signal honor. Aldon Ingersoll won the firs such award in 1941 and it has been given every year since to the Senior athlete who has shown unusual sportsmanship, perseverance and grit enough to "stick it out" for full season after full season. He must be a boy who has stuck to training rules and has managed to keep up school work in so doing. Bobby Houseknecht is one of the best kids ever to don an Ilion uniform and one of the most deserving. We know the hours of work this lad has spent on the bench, eating his heart out to be in there. But he never quit, never thought of quitting and finally has reached the goal for which he has served so hard. This award is voted by his fellow athletes, his coaches and member of the administrative staff at the High School. The Rocky Cramer Memorial Trophy annually goes to the boy who has met the following qualifications: He must have won a varsity letter. He must show exceptional work in physical education, especially in apparatus work. And he must have kept training and participated in two intramural activities. The winner of the award, Dick Leiws, is another tremendously hard working and determined athlete. Typical of his determination is the fact that he started out this Spring as a high jumper on the track team, but answered the coach's call for another pole vaulter. He workd very hard all season, and ended up by winning the Section Crown with his work at Liverpool in his final high school meet. This award was voted by his coaches and the administration. The Frank Lyons Memorial Trophy goes to the Senior who has shown qualities of good fellowship, has been a friend to all, has been cooperative, dependable, trustworthy, and cheerful. The award, voted by the Senior Class, went to one of the nicest kids in all of Ilion, Dave Getman. Dave's fulfillment of these qualifications is nerly letter perfect and he has been a natural for this award. A nice assignment, to cover the story of these award winners, fine deserving lads, all of them. It'll be a nice reminder of the Class of 1954, last to graduate from Ilion High School, and a group of kids that we'll never forget in the long years ahead. They were great!!!
