Robert H. Hall Named Ilion High Principal

ILION - Robert H. Hall, 39, a native of Falconer, research assistant of the Central New York School Study Council at Syracuse University, will assume his new duties as principal of Ilion High School July 1, when Principal Joseph Baker retires.

Baker, with the school for the past 35 years, has served as principal since the death of Principal J. G. Prindle in 1951. He had served as a school teacher and in various other capacities prior to appointment as principal.

Hall and his Wife, Georgene and two daughters, Claudia, 13, and Marcia, 9, plan to move to Ilion in time for the new school year when the girls will be enrolled in the 9th and 5th grades respectively.

In his Syracuse position, Hall's work consists of organizing committees of teachers and administrations currently English and mathematics teachers and guidance counselors, studying articulation from high school to college in their separate areas.

In Herkimer county he has been coordinator in activities of school administrators studying public relations and ethics in connection with the New York School Study Council.

He is also the Syracuse University representative on the Council for Administrators seeking better preparation for school administrators.

From 1954 to 1957, Hall was connected with the Jamestown Public Schools. While there he organized the corps program for Grade 7 and was on a committee making evaluation of all phases of the Jamestown School system.

From January 1946 through June 1954, Hall was with Cassadaga Valley Central School in Sinclairville. He was in charge of the citizenship education department and taught Grades 7 through 12. He was president of the Teachers Association and at various times was junior and senior class advisor.

From December 1944 to January 1946, he was on the staff of Fleet Admiral Nimitz doing staff work, planning operations, delivery of supplies, etc. He also served the USS Nevada, battleship which was later painted a bright orange and sunk in the Bikini Atomic Bomb trials after the war.

From February 1951 to July of 1952, he was given a leave of absence while he served on the USS Zelima during the Korean War. He was an executive officer in the U. S. Navy and made nine crossings from San Francisco to Korea or Japan. He was training officer on the ship.

Following graduation in 1939, from Fredonia State Normal School, Hall taught two years in Derby and then one year in Ripley Central School from which school he left to serve in the Navy.

He received his bachelor degree in 1948 and his master of science in education degree in 1933 from Fredonia. Currently he is completing course work for his doctoral of education degree from Syracuse University.

Summers from 1953 1957 he attended the Chautauqua Extension of Syracuse University at Chautauqua.

He served as trustee on the Village Board of Falconer from 1950 to 1951 leaving then for the Korean War. For several years he was a member of the established Camp Committee of Jamestown area Council of Girl Scouts.

The Halls are Methodists by church affiliation and he has served on the Falconer Methodist Church Official Board. He is also active in PTA work and is a past president.

Mrs. Hall, nee Georgene Johnsen, is interested in Girl Scout and YMCA work and has taught millinery in the Adult Education program. She is a native of Chicago and met her husband while she was serving as a WAVE and he was training at Great Lakes Naval Station during World War II.
