Pupils Bid Farewell to Joseph Baker

ILION - High School Principal Joseph Baker, after 35 years in the school system, has grown accustomed to many unexpected events during a routine school day.

But obviously he was not prepared for the surprise farewell given him in the school gym yesterday by 800 cheering students and faculty members who gave him a standing ovation for several minutes.

The event was scheduled, on the surface, as the usual assembly for the awarding of cups and trophies to outstanding athletes. Leo Grygiel, assistant principal, acted as master of ceremonies and everything went according to precedent.

Then it was his turn to be on the receiving end of the program. Susan Wood, a little seventh grader, started the ball rolling by presenting the first of many gifts to Baker, a pair of lawn chairs. Mrs. Baker was brought to the microphone and both were required to sit as virtual king and queen during the "very special" program that followed.

Others who made presentations were Christine Bartlett, Eighth Grade, Dick Crossett, Freshman class.

Mary Palmer, the Future Teachers of America; Robert Ahern, president of the senior class; Don Lawrence, the National Honor Society, presenting a plaque to be posted in the school signifying the society as the Joseph A. Baker Chapter, and Miss Phyllis Wainman, president of the Senior Class.

Mrs. Mildred Mabbett, community service chairman of William Hempstead Post, VFW, Auxiliary, presented Baker a "meritorious service citation" and Mrs. Iva Conte, also represnting the Auxiliary, gave a purse.

Trophies were award to the following seniors:

Rocky Cramer Award, Wayne Murphy, Jack Noll;
Frank Lyons Award, Don Bridger, Phyllis Wainman;
Richard Lewis Trophy, Jack Noll;
Varsity Club Unsung Hero Award, Gary Grieg;
Outstanding Girls' athletic Award, Barbara Jones.
