Ilion Athlete Gets Michigan Scholarship Wayne Murphy, outstanding football, basketball and baseball star of Ilion High School, has accepted a full scholarship Michigan State University. Murphy, a senior at Ilion High and one of the best athletes to to come out of that school in years, was a guest last weekend of Michigan State officials. He was accompanied by Henry M. Ferris, Ilion athletics director and former member of the Michigan State varsity squad. At Michigan Murphy was entertained by several coaches and members of the Michigan State squad, including former All American and New York Giant star Sonny Grandelius, presently a Michigan backfield coach and Jonn Polanchek, former Bolling Air Force coach now coaching Michigan freshmen. Murphy, now leading scorer on Ilion High School varsity basketball team, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Murphy, also a star of the Ilion varsity in the late 20's. Wayne has several All-star honor awards in the Iroquois League in all three sports and during the past season had a scoring mark in league football competition. Michigan State officials were much impressed with films showing Murphy's prowess during some of those games.
