Portrait of Former Principal Is Unveiled

ILION - The surprise unveiling of an oil portrait of retired Principal Joseph Baker highlighted the impressive candlelight ceremony of the Joseph Baker National Honor Society yesterday at Ilion High School.

The portrait, now hung in the auditorium, was a gift of the Class of 1958, and was presented to Baker by Charles Lang mathematics teacher and class advisor for the 1958 graduates.

Miss Barbara Hollandt, Society President accepted the gift for the society.

Over 400 junior and senior high school students heard Baker say, "I promise to do everything and anything in my power in the future toward the betterment of the school."

Baker was a member of the teaching staff from 1922 until 1958 when he retired as principal. The Honor Society was named after him following his retirement.

Brief talks were given by George Purple, superintendent of schools, Leo Sammon, principal, and Leo Grygiel, class advisor. The nine new members inducted were: Suzanne Bouck, Ralph Adams, Brian Hamilton, Jeanne Castle, Linda McCloud, Barbara Sporer, Diane Selwood, Gail Mackin, Barbara Stubbs.

Other present officers are: vice president, William Tooney: secretary - treasurer, Pamela Christy and members, Beth Coons, Carol Putnm, Roger Lemr, Carol Rohmer, Christine Thierfelder, Maxine Nichols.
