Awards Given At Ilion High

ILION - Presentation of awards to outstanding students, Student Senate awards and Senior Mirror awards yesterday featured the final assembly of the year in the Ilion Central High School.

Opened by Robert Hall, high school principal, and Leo Grygiel, assistant principal, the assembly was then turned over to Miss Sandy Costello, Student Senate president, who presented pins to other Senate representatives. She in turn received a gift presented by Frances Coriale.

The following awards were presented:

Outstanding Senior athlete, Mary Palmer;
Sportsmanship Award, Floyd Rose;
Rocky Cramer Memorial Trophy, Fred Pashke;
Frank Lyons Good Fellowship Award, Miss Costello.

Special recognition was granted two new awards, the first presented by Mr. and Mrs. Leo Golicki, in memory of their son, Leo, to the outstanding all-around senior. This year's winner was Edward Vernooy.

In accepting the award from Henry Ferris, coach, to be given for the next 10 years, Hall paid tribute to the late Leo Golicki, who he said, "was an outstanding boy."

Ferris then presented the Unsung Hero Award to Robert Drumm and Donald Beach, president of the Senior Class, presented the 1959 Senior Class Memorial to Leo Golicki. Mr. Hall accepted this award which will be presented for the first time in 1960.

Beach then presented valedictory gifts to the school; luggage to Miss Nelle Schmidt, advisor, and a gift to William Teeter, also an advisor.

William Cotton, faculty member, presented the Senior Mirror awards to Ralph Bottini, Pamela Barnes, Sharon Clive, Rodney Billings and Linda Kornbrust, who served as mistress of ceremonies for the presentation of Mirrors to the five persons for whom the publications were dedicated.

They are Miss Schmidt, Mr Teeter, Brian Leach and Richard Bamberger, former faculty members, and Mr. Hall, George Purple, school superintendent, was also presented a copy of the Mirror.

In closing Edward Vernooy offered, "Each Class in Turn," from the book.
