High School Invocations: Former Principal Baker to Speak At Ilion's Afternoon Graduation ILION - Two innovations are planned for Ilion High School graduation June 24, it was learned today. Joseph A. Baker, Ilion teacher 35 years and former high school principal, will be the main speaker. Usually the speaker is an "outsider." The ceremonies will be held 2 p.m. that Sunday in the Capitol Theater - the first time in recent history commencement has been held during the afternoon. School officials explained the degraduation was made so more graduates' friends and relatives could attend, and the seniors could spend more time afterwards with their families. Mr. Baker, of 101 Grove St., is still a substitute teacher in the school system although he retired July 1, 1958. This past week he was seen teaching shop courses. He is regarded statewide as one of the finest mathematics instructors. He became principal in January 1951 after the death of John G. Prindle. When Dr. Earl P. Watkins died some eight years ago, he became acting district superintendent until the appointment of George Purple. Mr. Baker then continued as principal until he retired, being succeeded by Robert H. Hall, who resigned Aug. 24, 1960 and in turn was succeeded by Leo J. Sammon Jr. The high school losts 131 seniors eligible to graduate. The valedictorian will be Roger A. Fortuna Jr., salutatorian Harold Shelley.
