Ilion High Informative - By "Spook" Preischs
Well, Ilion has been undergoing several activities the past week. It seems as though most of the student body are cognizant of the fact that the exams are coming in a couple of weeks by trying to prepare for them. Although warm weather has hit most of the valley. Ilion's pupils seem to be buckling down because they have their afternoons off to do some useful study on their own. Last week, the juniors presented a successful Junior Prom. The couples entered through sliding Japanese doors and crossed over a bridge into the "Land of the Rising Sun". The centerpiece consisted of two islands connected by a small bridge, with a pagoda on each one. The pagoda on the larger island was about twelve feet high. The favors consisted of chopsticks, fortune cookies, and Japanese hats. The servers were dressed in kimonos as geisha girls. At midnight the "Queen of the Prom" was crowned. Vicki Rice was chosen as queen by the couples. A grand march followed. A committee of five teachers and two students selected the varsity and JV cheerleaders of next year after three weeks of practice. The varsity cheerleaders are Judy Gray, Jane Danforth, Cheryl Miller, Janet Frezza, Susan Burns and Sandy Jones. Barb Alexander, Carol Pozniak, Pat Urtz, Sandy Santmire, Mary Rapenske, and Annette Rota make up the junior varsity cheerleaders. The National Junior Honor Society has held an auction each day last week and will hold it during next week also from 12:10 to 12:20 p.m. Several faculty members have contributed to the auction by donating three puppies and a few kittens. Among other articles are a key chain decorated with the New York State seal from Gov. Rockefeller, an ashtray donated by Lyndon B. Johnson, a steel engraving of the White House sent by the First Lady: also Senator Van Wiggeren has contributed several articles. The Belles, a musical group consisting of several girls, performed twice Monday night. They sang at the annual meeting of Sunday school teachers at the Methodist Church at 7:45. Then they performed at the reception for retiring teachers at West Hill School. FTA chose their new officers for the new year at a picnic held at Pat Hoffman's house, this year's president. The officers are Carol Henry, president; Lesa Siver, vice-president; Kathy Stone, secretary; and Karol Klippel, treasurer. Forty eighth-graders along with their parents who are attending Annunciation School were present at a meeting last week with Mrs. Vivian Wright, guidance counselor; and Mr. Leo Sammon, principal. The boys' schedules were drawn up on the following day while the girls' had to wait until this Monday and Tuesday. I wish these students the best of luck in coming up to the Ilion High School next year. Our baseball team has had an average season by winning a few, the last one being Frankfort last Thursday, and losing a few. Yesterday Ilion traveled to Herkimer to play under the lights. The results will be found in the sports page. Ilion's track team has captured first place in the Iroquois League loop. On May 30th Ilion was host of the Iroquois League Track Meet at 1:00 p.m. Ilion succeeded in compiling a colossal score of 63 which is a new record. Oneonta was the closest competitor of a score of 30. On June 1st Ilion returns to the scene of their last Invitational victory when they travel to Jamesville-Dewitt for the Section III tournament. Those champions in the Section III tournament will travel to Sewanhoka, Long Island, to compete in the Intersectionals on June 8th. The Girls' Athletic Association awards banquet was held last Monday at 6:00 p.m. in the cafetorium for all girls in grades 9-12. The Girls’ Athletic Council elected officers at a recent meeting for 1963-64. Those chosen were Carol Adams, president; Sandy Shaw, vice-president; Nancy Frosch, secretary; Barb Wardle, treasurer; and Sandy Jones, parliamentarian. Have a happy June month, but remember studies come first.
