Ilion High Informative - By "Spook" Preischs

 

Well, school is no more in session for regular class periods, as summer vacation rounds the bend for the students, and the tests await to be answered. During the summer, however, IHS will hold a summer school session for those interested in courses offered.

Besides summer sessions in Ilion this year, the summer holds many adventures awaiting some students around Ilion High. Seven students have been chosen to attend a seminar program at Colgate University from July 1 through Aug. 9.

The sophomores will follow an advanced course of study in science while the juniors work in social studies. The juniors attending will be Stephanie Neal, Paul Morris, Larry Pasek; sophomores, Bill Cornell, Rick Albin, Kathy Hoffman, Bridget Carney.

Another summer activity that will find Ilion participating is five junior boys at Boys' State. Steve Getman, Don Keddell, Paul Morris, Chuck Bennett, Al Slocum have been chosen to attend at Colgate University from June 23 to 29. Mark White is the alternate.

Ilion's baseball team pulled into the Iroquois League with a fourth place finish, tied with Little Falls. Three players were chosen to represent the Iroquois AllStar nine. They are first baseman, Doug Bernard; catcher, Bob Heneka, which makes his third time in a row; and "Bootsie" Day. Ilion's three batsmen pace the ball team in their batting average with .370, .360, and .540 respectively.

The track men of Ilion won the league title and league meet held in Ilion May 30 compiling a record score of 63 points. Several of Ilion's track stars went to compete in the Section III tests at RFA Ilion had one double winner and one single winner in the event. Terry Sweeney won the mile event in 4.35.6, never pressed while holding the lead all the way. Terry also won the broad jump event with a jump of 20 feet and 912 inches. Ilion's single winner was Tom Deyle who threw the discus a distance of 156 feet and 2 inches.

At the Intersections of the State held at Sewanhaka, Long Island, again Terry Sweeney placed in the mile event by coming in sixth place among all the boys that competed throughout the state. Tom Deyle hurled the discuss a distance of 163 feet, 11 inches, about seven feet short of the meet and state record.

Nine teachers are leaving IHS this week. Four are retiring, while the rest are going on to other places. Miss Barbara Schwarz, who was World History teacher, she taught 43 years; Miss Genevieve Ruby, who was in the commercial department, will leave after 41 years of teaching; Mrs. Elizabeth Marston, one of our English teacher, will leave after 29 years of teaching; also Mrs. Erva Hildebrandt, who was in the integrated program, has taught for 25 years before leaving. These retiring teachers were honored at the Senior Assembly held June 10.

Other teachers who are leaving are: Douglas Merchant who will enter the baptist ministry; Miss Alice Thornton leaving to get married; Miss Jeannette Bojarski will leave in order to teach in the elementary gradss in Utica; Mrs. Suzanne Bird leaving to spend more time at home; Robert Utter is leaving Ilion to go to Columbia University for two years of research in education.

The seniors at Ilion have been very busy the last month or so with special activities. On May 29, the Senior Class had its annual picnic at Green Lake near Syracuse. Although the weather was bad, the class had fun in various activities. June 7 brought many seniors to school in shorts and other types of clothes because this particular day was "Dress Down Day." On the following Monday "Dress Up Day", the Senior Assembly was held. The retiring teachers were honored, several awards and trophies were given to outstanding seniors who met the qualifications, and also the Mirror was dedicated to the school and several teachers. This program took approximately one hour and a half.

The "Mirror," Ilion's yearbook, was distributed to the Senior Class on May 27-8 while the underclassmen waited until June 3 to obtain their yearbook. Yesterday all seniors obtained their cap and gown. Baccalaureate will be held tomorrow in the Presbyterian Church at 4 p.m. Commencement exercises will be held the following week at the Capitol Theater Building at 2 p.m.

Many seniors have been accepted at a place for higher learning throughout the state and country. Those accepted at state universities are: Albany, Donna Kubika; Brockport, Tom Bracken, Gregg Campbell, Marie Cirillo; David Preische, Mary Rossi, Tom Slocum; Cortland, Janet Cormia; Cobleskill, Jim Ortlieb; Buffalo, Susan Wood: MVCC, Diane Abeling, Russell Bouck, Christine Drury, Robert Hamilton, James Janis, David Lennox, Linda Pribis, Ted Trombley; Morrisville, Richard Beach, Stephen Crocker, Cheryl Jones, Nancy Schaepe, Thomas Stark, Ed Woodrick; New Paltz, Margarette Humphrey, Barbara Rogers.

Also, Oneonta, Diane Dulak, John Gogol, Patricia Hoffman, Richard Luczynski, Beatrice Nelson; Oswego, Henry Bonn, Robert Heneka, Mary Pat Kerr; Plattsburgh, Mary Moody; Potsdam, Cathy Pratt; Westchester Community College, Betsy Anderson.

The seniors who will attend other institutions are; Keuka, Jane Alexander; Hamilton, Vince Bonvino, Thomas Deyle; D'Youville, Linda Braybrook, Paul Smith, Russell Chesebrough; Vassar, Fay Edwards; Rider, Carol Guarnsey; St. Lawrence, Laura Mason; Utica College, John May; Alfred Technical School, Jenifer Rota; Syracuse Forestry, Jerry Starks.

Seniors who are attending college out of state will be Brown University, James Willey; Eastern New Mexico, David Wainman; Kentucky, Mike Sitterly; Catholic University, Barb Scanlon; Marietta, Cathy Rolling; Boston University, Vicki Rice; Hope, Gene Donovan; SMU, Jon Gerber; Penn State, Stephen Jones; Westminster College, Penn. Marilyn Nile.

Many seniors are still awaiting answers to their applications to the college of their choice. This year's senior class seems to be ready for graduation on June 23.

I would like to extend "best wishes" to those who have tests awaiting them next week. I, also would like to extend my congratulations to the Class of 1963.
