Marilyn Nile of Ilion, Wins AAUW Award

ILION - Miss Marilyn Linda Nile, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel R. Nile, 235 S. Fourth Ave., a member of Ilion Central School graduating class, is the 1963 recipient of Herkimer Branch, American Assn, of University Women, annual scholarship.

This is the fourth year that the award, amounting this year to $250, has been presented by the branch to a girl from one of the five Valley high., schools, Frankfort-Schuyler, Ilion, Herkimer, Mohawk, and Little Falls. She is the second Ilion graduate to receive the award, which went to Miss Elizabeth Coons two years ago.

The first scholarship went to Miss Barbara Higler, of Herkimer, and last year's to Miss Joanne Waldron, of Little Falls.

Decision was made by a committee comprising Mrs. Arnold B. Copping Herkimer, education chairman; Mrs. Edward Armstrong, of Mohawk; Miss Emily Denton, of Herkimer, president of AAUW, and two guidance directors, chosen on an alternating basis, Glenn Salsburg, of Little Falls, and Mrs. Vivian Wright, of Ilion. It was based on personal interviews, school records, and a letter of application, with each school selecting a girl as its candidate.

Miss Nile, fourth in her class with an average of 92.9 per cent, plans to enter Westminster College, Pa. She has been a varsity cheerleader, members of Girls Athletic Council, secretary of the sophomore class, member of band and orchestra, and member of National Honor Society.

She played a lead role in the senior class play, has been co-chairman of senior ball, and Girls' State representative last year. Outside of school, she is a member of Beta Chi Rho, Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, and YMCA Youth Board.
