Ilion High Informative - By Dennis Jones

As I sit here, pen in hand and my report card sitting on the upper left hand corner of the early American styled desk, I think back over my high school years. One thought sticks in my mind, "Why didn't I listen to my parents?"

I only wish I had. Perhaps I would not have had such a tough time getting a college to choose me. I say "choose me" because if my parents' warning had penetrated my overly thick skull, I could choose a college, instead of vice versa.

I think we've all used these excuses: "My parents don't understand. Besides, the school curriculum has changed a great deal since they were in school." Sure the curriculum has changed and principles of acquiring skills don't change, only the methods. Supposing one of your own kind told you to study and get those marks up. Would you listen?

Sure, high school's a lot of fun but it can be even more fun if your marks are up. I know! From my freshman year until the last month of my junior year I had a ball. All this was at the expense of my yearly average, and perhaps any future schooling I want.

Then I woke up. Now in my senior year and carrying a B- average in an academic course, I'm having the time of my life. You don't need to be a brain, but only to do a little studying. Remember, students, you gain nothing by going backwards or staying in one spot, but you gain everything if you move forward.

I wish to apologize to the Golden Bomber football squad for not wishing them luck in the Herkimer-Ilion game. Ilion gives their sincere congratulations to Herkimer Magicians for winning a fair football game and giving an excellent show of sportsmanship.

Ilion High Schools athletic department has acquired Mr. Lawrence Tozzi as a cadet, or student teacher for ten weeks. The students welcome him to our school system.

Basketball and wrestling practice has started already. The kids hear certain players like "Cousey" Bracken and "Needle" Campbell have received injuries. Good luck to these teams in the coming season. After a losing football season, the school's behind them and hoping to keep possession of the All Sports Trophy.

Mr. David Bouck, Ilion's mechanical drawing instructor, is drawing up plans for a new football scoreboard.

The high school is due for an assembly Nov. 20, when Mrs. Van Court, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, will present the school with 57 new American flags through Wes Lints and Dave Wells the student council will gratefully accept this much needed and appreciated gift.
