Ilion High Informative - By Dennis Jones
School spirit? Did someone mention school spirit? What's that? Ilion High School used to have some of that 'stuff', but it doesn't anymore. The students used to walk down our halls of ivy and sing the "Old Alma Mater," along with such songs as "Ilion Will Shine Tonight" and "You've Got to Be A Football Hero." Women teachers eyes would shed a tear, while the male instructors would smile with pride and pat themselves on the back. Many students lost their voices on the buses that brought us back, and more than one student came back with a real headache. When the buses went through the "away" town, everyone on the streets would turn and look, because of all the shouting. And this was on the way back! Noise? Why, never was so much noise heard from Ilion. But is school spirit just noise? No, noise is just part of school spirit. Noise is the outward show of school spirit. What one feels inside oneself, that feeling of pride and achievement for your school is school spirit. Its being able to scream your head off at the team, especially when they're losing. Perhaps, then is the time to scream the hardest. Ilion High School has a false school spirit. You see, when the team is winning the "old" spirit rises. But when the team starts losing, there is no school spirit at all. No more do students roam through tire halls singing; the teachers' eyes do not fill with tears; there are no smiles among the men. No more voices are lost on the way home, no more headaches. Oh, perhaps there are a few of each, but not too often. I have but one question - where is Ilion High School's spirit? According to the "Quill," the senior class Christmas card sale netted approximately $450. Bea Nelson and Jon Gerber directed the sale. The Ilion Central High School cross-country team captured Class B third place at the Watertown Intersectionals. Seven sections of the state were represented. In Class A, Colonie took high honors, while in Class C Cooperstown was first. Congratulations to the cross-country team for a wonderful season. The high school varsity basketball learn scrimmaged Clinton High last Wednesday at Ilion. Ilion won 72-26. The starters this year for Ilion, according to Coach Joe Sorge. are Tom "Cousy" Bracken, Tom Deyle, Ed Woodrick, Doug Bernard and Jim Willy. The next scrimmage is against Rome on Tuesday. Congratulations to Bob Heneka for making Iroquois League AllStar fullback.
