Ilion High Informative - By "Spook" Preischs
The word around Ilion last week was "Beat Lowville." Ilion will be going to the Class A Section III finals trying to recapture the title and trophy they gained last year. Defeating Herkimer last week (76-48) made Ilion eligible for the finals tonight at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. A pep rally, which was about a half hour, was held yesterday trying to give the 15 Golden boys enough confidence for a win tonight. The pep rally consisted of a skit put on by the cheerleaders, a few cheers, and a song for the basket men. Ilion's Orpheus Choir is sponsoring a candy sale which began last Thursday and is supposed to last a week. A portable television, portable hi-fi, and a transistor radio will be awarded to the three top salesmen according to Diane Abeling, president of the organization. They are sponsoring this sale in order to raise money to be used for the production of musical shows. Richard Ingraham reports the instrumental groups are practicing for competition in contests and approaching concerts. Members of the Dramatics Club will travel to Utica on March 27 to see the "Sound of Music," a musical which will be presented by a traveling troupe of actors from New York City. At a previous meeting, the group made plans for a one act play which will be presented sometime in the future during the school day. Gene Donovan, president of the club, will direct the production. Last week, Ilion gymnasts traveled to Fayetteville - Manlius to compete in Section III gymnastic competition. Bill Lennox placed a fourth place in the rope climb and Ken Dye copped a fourth place in the trampoline. Bill Holden captured a third place in the still ring competition. Ilion placed ahead of both Rome and Proctor in total points. Last Tuesday during Activity Period the freshmen were entertained in the boys gym for different vocational fields. During last week fencing began for girls in grades 9-12 according to coach Mr. James Fahy. The girls will learn basic fundamentals and various movements. Fencing is an excellent conditioner which teachers balance, grace, and body control.
