Ilion Girl Wins Auxiliary Award ILION - A $1,000 American Legion Auxiliary scholarship has been awarded to Miss Mary Carney, Ilion High School senior, according to Mrs. Marion Hess, Fifth District chairman. Daughter of Mrs. Mary M. Carney, 1 Ade St. [12 Crescent St.] and the late Dr. Theodore Carney, she was the only girl from New York State to receive the scholarship. Sixteen seniors in the state competed for the award. The scholarship is a national president's award, and is a gift scholarship not a loan. Miss Carney plans to enter Albany State University College in September. The election was on basis of character, Americanism, leadership, scholarship, and need. Miss Carney was one of eight winners in Area B, including Delaware, District of Columbia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York. Selection of the winner was by these area guidance directors: T. E. Jablonski, Frankfort; Mrs. Gloria Falzareno, Frankfort; William E. Fauveau, Herkimer; Ross E. Robinson, Little Falls; Julian Thompson, Mohawk. Miss Carney was president of the National Senior Honor Society this year, and has been a member of the society four years. She was junior class secretary, a junior varsity and varsity Cheerleader, a member of Orpheus Choir, and Belles and was in all county music for four years and all-state music competition this year. She is layout editor of the "Mirror," the senior annual, and is active in sports, being member of the Girls Athletic Club. Among outside activities, she is on the board of Ilion Youth Center, and is member of the Philia Charity Sorority.
