Winning Coveted Lever Cup A Brewer - Family Tradition By Hal Hefner ILION - Winning the Lever Cup has become a habit with the members of the John Brewer family of 9 Frederick St. The three sons of county legislator and Mrs. John E. Brewer Sr., John Jr., Douglas, and Terry, have each received the coveted trophy in their senior year of high school. It is presented at the annual athletic awards assembly. The Lever Cup is given annually to the student who annually to the student who attains the highest scholastic and athletic standards. It was donated by the late Harold B. Lever, a former Ilion athletic star, in memory of William Hempstead and William Schletterer. THE TROPHY remains in the trophy case at the high school. It was first awarded in 1924 John Jr., 24, is a 1962 graduate of Ilion High School, where he was a standout in football, basketball, and baseball. A 1966 graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland, he is now a teacher at the North St. School, Ilion.
