THIS SNOW SCULPTURE by the sophomore class at Ilion High School took third prize in the annual Winter Carnival event yesterday. ILION - Winners of both the Outstanding Teenage Young Man Contest and the snow sculpture were announced last night during the Ilion vs. Norwich basketball game by the Ilion Jaycees and Student Council, sponsors of the annual Winter Carnival. Steve Applegate and Robert Keddell tied for first place in the Outstanding Teen - age Young Man Contest. Each received a plaque and a $25 bond. They will be eligible to participate in district Jaycee competition at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Frankfort Bank. Outstanding young men from Frankfort, Herkimer, and West Canada Jaycees will compete. Applegate and Keddell were selected from six finalists by judges. The other finalists were John Carter, Daniel O'Brien, David Williams and Steve Mitchell. They were judged on school achievements and activities. Applegate is son of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Applegate, 320 Otsego St. Keddell is son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keddell 100 First St. In the snow sculptor competition, there were two categories: senior high school classes, and community entries. First place in the high school category was won by the freshman class. The sculpture was two oversized sneakers with a protruding toe with the theme, "We're Growing to Success." Second place in the high school category went to the senior class. The sculpture was a series of steps leading up a hillside to a diploma and the future, under the theme "The Impossible Dream." Third place in this category went to the sophomore class for a sculpture of a big Pepsi bottle with the theme, "We've Got a Lot to Live." Frozen Alligator First place in the community category went to youths who work on the village skating rinks, for their frozen alligator created near the Russell Park rink. Second place in the community entries went to the junior high group that created a large book sculpture. Prizes were: first, $15; second $10; third, $5. The Carnival continued today with ice and snow skating and snowmobile contests, and will wind up with a dance at 8 tonight. Snow sculpture judges were Edward Wade and Mrs. Paul White, village recreations director; Donald Alexander, president, Chamber of Commerce; William Brewer and Daniel DeForrest, Jaycee co-chairman.
