Ilion Graduates Class Of 180

ILION HIGH AWARD winners at graduation Saturday afternoon in the auditorium included

ILION - Diplomas were presented to 180 graduates of the Class of 1972 at Ilion High School auditorium during commencement exercises Saturday.

The diplomas were handed out by Russell Putnam, president board of education; James H Dunn, superintendent of schools; and Leo J Sammon Jr., high school principal.

Dunn officiated at the awarding of commencement scholarships, as follows: Senior honor society scholarship, Darlene Doolen. Earl P Watkin memorial scholarship, Charles Venditte; I Clark Seamans scholarship, Sharon Reynolds, of class of 1971; the Clayton Memorial scholarship, Guy Snedeker.

Also, the Burton T Seymour memorial scholarship, Nicholas Korba; the Ilion Jayncee and Jaycee scholarship, Sharon Yardley; Ilion Savings & Loan scholarship, Penny Jones; Daniel Stone memorial scholarship, Barbara McGrade.

Also, the George E Anderson community college scholarship, Patrice Meehan; Antoinette Tisci memorial scholarship, Sally Tracy; Daniel Keddell memorial scholarship. Robert Strife.

Also, the PTO scholarships, Diane Bates, Mary Kenealy; Ilion Community Club scholarship, Neil Thompson; Remington Arms Employee's Club Griffin Jones senior awards, Phyllis Palmer, Norman Johnson, Joanne Marhaver.

The commencement program also listed many other scholarships, awards and distinctions won by some of the graduates and announced recently at the annual awards assembly.

Special Tribute

Special tributes and recognitions included tribute to Dr. James S. Anderson, who is completing 10 years of service on the board of education.

Five retiring members of the Ilion faculty were recognized Miss Leona Whiter, Mrs. Bertha Hemingway, Miss Cecilia Kelpy, Mrs. Florence Collins, and Mrs. Angie Benes.

A flower place was announced in memory of the late Leslie Hoke, board of education member, given by his wife and family, and other flowers were given by the class of 1973.

Valedictory address was given by Guy Snedeker, salutatory by Deborah Kubala.

Class officers were Steven McGrath, president; Jill Nunneker, vice president, and Richard Gardinier, secretary-treasurer.

Seniors, James Irving, Larry Manion and Guy Snedeker were National Merit scholarship finalists.

Regents scholars in the class were Snedeker, Manion, Irving, Norman Johnson, Laura Anderson, Sarah Getman, Susan Garnsey, Christopher Jones, Donald Weller, Deborah Kubala, Lynn Nile, David Manion, Thomas Falzareno and Robert Strife, with Barbara McGrade as an alternate. Kenneth Helmer received a Regents child veteran scholarship.
