Ilion School Boundaries Adopted; Begin Sept 1

By JEAN FAY

ILION - Four changes were made in the preliminary boundaries report, adopted to become effective Sept. 1, at a recent meeting of the Board of Education, according to George E. Anderson, superintendent of schools.

The changes include: Children should be able to walk who live one mile from school unless the route is impractical. The original proposal was for a child living within nine-tenths of a mile.

The second change, all children living east of Pleasant Ave. continue at North Street School. It was suggested by the committee that these pupils be bussed to the Barringer Road School.

Third, children living on Charles Street will continue at West Hill School. These pupils had been scheduled to go to the new Barringer Road School.

Fourth, children living on Armory St. and Benedict Ave. will attend Barringer Rd. Prior to the public hearing, these pupils being transferred to North St. School.

Other recommendations for transportation are as follows:

1. Whenever possible and practical the children should walk to school.

2. In inclement weather the walking children should be able stay for lunch.

3. Children in the section of Barringer Road School bordered by Grove St. and Prospect Ave. should be bussed because of distance due to an indirect route and to eliminate any child walking on the lower section of Brook St.

4. Children in the Hess Ave., Lester Ave., View Terrace lection bussed to the North St. School.

The report also urged that walkers living on or near Barringer Road be rerouted to avoid walking on Barringer Road.

Regarding the transportation policy, no change should be effective in areas outside the village limits in South Ilion, North Ilion, Old Forge Road, Barringer Road (South from Old Forge Road Corner) Otsego St. (South of Village Line). Elementary children should be transported who live in excess of one mile from the neighborhood school. To consider a revision of the transportation policy when it is necessary due to hazardous road condition, overcrowding of neighborhood school.

The cafeteria policy read that all schools will have an open cafeteria policy, that is, any child may have lunch by signing up at the beginning of a school day.

The only limitation to be placed on the cafeteria program shall be the size of the facility and the equipment available.

The only limitation to be placed on the cafeteria program shall be the size of the facility and the equipment available.

The committee on rezoning for the elementary school met, and agreed on three purposes.

To eliminate the over-crowded conditions in existing schools.

To establish new boundaries far the elementary schools and to recommend suitable transportation for all students within an impractical walking route.

The committee also advised that the boundaries be flexible enough to permit changes from one school to another when classes become too large to be taught well, or too small to be economically feasible. This to be determined by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the school administration.
